Warren, A generator for DC, rather than an alternator producing AC and rectified to DC, just spits out DC. The DC slip ring is usually segmented to flip the fields. Hi EveryoneI have this 120 volt 60hz single phase generator, four pole 1800 rpm , a Fairbanks Morse, possibly from the 1950's. It is very massively built, and in decent condition.I need such a thing for an experiment I am doing. However, it is a challenge to know how to hook it up. I can't find a wiring diagram on line.It is peculiar. It may predate diodesHow did they energize the field windings? It has a complete commutator, and brushes, as well as slip rings, and brushes,It was direct coupled to a gas engine. I have installed a stub shaft, and a bearing to support the engine end, as the that bearing support was the engine bearing. It seems pretty good for my purposes if I only can figure out how to make it go.An interesting feature about it is that it has an electric starter function to turn the generator into a motor for starting the gas engine it used to be connected to. Bart, do you remember that 4 cylinder gas generator I gave you? This is likely about a similar vintage, only, this is just a couple of KW, I'm hoping will do the job.If anybody can remember pre-diode times I would sure be grateful. How would the voltage regulation work?Cheers Warren Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android

MickIt is an Ac generator(alternator?) 60 hz Ac? It is 1800 rpm, I'm wondering if the DC windings are used to power the fields, crazy as that seems. If needed, I guess I might have to take it apart to find out how it works, which I didn't do 20 years ago when fitting the bearing AC and end plate,) for connection to a three hp Chinese diesel in my schooner's engine room.I am still on the kick to hook Samsung washing machine motors to generators, and run them on 400 volt pulsed dc.I have a 3600 rpm 2.6 Kw made up But still awaiting the finalization of the circuit diagram to make the interface board for the Arduino. The idea is to hit it with RF high voltage pulses, sequenced as three phase. People are reporting success, but you have to try these things yourself, as it appears too good to be true.I had all these things, except I had lost the 1800 rpm genny at the bottom of a box of 2000 business records, the movers packed.Like, I was so not interested in those books, who knew a generator was out in one of the the sheds all this timeCheers Warren Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android On Wed., 8 May 2019 at 9:29 p.m., Mick [email protected] [EVGRAY]<[email protected]> wrote: Warren, A generator for DC, rather than an alternator producing AC and rectified to DC, just spits out DC. Hi warren, does your generator have a spec. plate, knowing the details, model etc could make it easier to get the wiring diagram.cheers.Eduardo ----- Forwarded message ----- From: Mick [email protected] [EVGRAY] <[email protected]>To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]>Sent: Thursday, 9 May 2019, 11:24:18 am AESTSubject: Re: [EVGRAY] 120 volt generator Warren, A generator for DC, rather than an alternator producing AC and rectified to DC, just spits out DC. EduardoSadly, the plate if any, was on the gas engine. I only know it was a Fairbanks Morse which was very heavily built, using their own engine, which for any company, is unusual. It seemed to be for continuous duty, but there is no indication when it was made, or what model. It could have even been war time WW11 vintage except for the paint.Cheers Warren Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android On Thu., 9 May 2019 at 4:14 a.m., Eduardo Codina [email protected] [EVGRAY]<[email protected]> wrote: Hi warren, does your generator have a spec. plate, knowing the details, model etc could make it easier to get the wiring diagram.cheers.Eduardo ----- Forwarded message ----- From: Mick [email protected] [EVGRAY] <[email protected]>To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]>Sent: Thursday, 9 May 2019, 11:24:18 am AESTSubject: Re: [EVGRAY] 120 volt generator Warren, A generator for DC, rather than an alternator producing AC and rectified to DC, just spits out DC. JamesThe three phase motors with a ring of permanent magnets around the outside that Hector might call out runners are the kind that are being used. Now, I have not, in person, seen the magic on my bench, as I have not completed the driver circuit board yet.I have been talking with a number of those who have them working, some for as much as two years now. Three of them are in America, which as you know, is a country where truth is up for grabs these days. However, the useful wealth of detail regarding their work leads me to believe them, as I encounter , and overcome, similar challenges, they describe. One unit that was being monitored, ended up being sold, in a recreational vehicle that it had been installed in. It was producing 1500 watts for air conditioning and heat for two years, while parked in a friend's driveway. The friend had to sell the house so this fellow had to sell the bus, with this generator he made.A retired guy in his 80's bought the bus and was driving it out of the country, to South America. Our builder lost contact with his work, and is now building another, "even better" unit.Nobody doing this is"main stream" or rich, by any means except in Europe where an well employedengineer is building one as an ethical hobby. There are others, but I only have second hand contact with them, so far.We are considering updating my 2001 Subaru Forester for an electric Hyundai with a 400+ km rangeIf this unit I am building works, and that is a big IF, the device will easily sit in the trunk with claims that even 10 to 20 KW may be possible. Mine is only a 2.6 KW test unit, and it is said that it will likely consume 7 to 800 watts.I don't understand the physics, though everyone I have talked to, has a theory of why their machines work. No two of them agree on anything except these Samsung motors are crazy powerful. One even says it is the diameter, giving the torque. There you have it, for now.Cheers Warren Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android On Thu., 9 May 2019 at 12:27 p.m., James Glinski [email protected] [EVGRAY]<[email protected]> wrote: Warren you said people are having success .could you relate the level of success with out giving names ?.and hector would know but I think a general three phase motor like one used in a TV would work too . good hunting . Bart, do you remember that 4 cylinder gas generator I gave you? This is likely about a similar vintage, only, this is just a couple of KW, I'm hoping will do the job. I have installed a stub shaft, and a bearing to support the engine end, as the that bearing support was the engine bearing. An interesting feature about it is that it has an electric starter function to turn the generator into a motor for starting the gas engine it used to be connected to. Bart, do you remember that 4 cylinder gas generator I gave you? This is likely about a similar vintage, only, this is just a couple of KW, I'm hoping will do the job. If anybody can remember pre-diode times I would sure be grateful. How would the voltage regulation work? Cheers Warren Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android

OleAfter all the trouble, 1 KW hardly seems enough when 700 to 800 watts are required to run the Samsung motor. It is reported that motor may drive a 10KW unit, if not more, provided the rotor hub is beefed up.One fellow is completing a 30 kw unit for delivery at the end of next week, using an industrial version of the Samsung washing machine motor, which is all self contained, bearing, shaft, rotor and stator. He has only shown videos of the old working 1500 watt unit, plus the newly delivered 30 KW generator head.I think I will plod away, and finish my 2.6 kw unit, to see if I can make it go, 3600 rpm, or not.No matter how many cycles, it can be converted to DC, and inverted, if need be.Still, there are no physics which come to mind, so if indeed it works, we will then have to figure out why. This also could be another of those wild goose chases, as we call fruitless efforts , here in Canada. In that case, it has cost very little.Should it work, it will be exciting.Cheers Warren Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android On Fri., 10 May 2019 at 4:49 a.m., [email protected] [EVGRAY]<[email protected]> wrote: Hi Warren, "Where did you find that?" Where did you find that?I think mine is 2 kw, but then again, the cast aluminium fan shroud on the generator looks the same, with those perforation patterns.Thank you so much!I will need to make most of the parts for regulation I would guess, being that old of vintage. The 1800 rpm is very close to acceptable Samsung motor speed. I have some homework to do, now, to figure this all out.I wonder if parts could still be available?Cheers Warren Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android On Thu., 9 May 2019 at 6:26 p.m., onielsen@...
