Norm, How many different setups did you use in your formal investigation of the neutral spike, I know about the locked rotor motor but were there others? There seems to be some crossover with Don Smiths claims of aluminum and copper used as opposing capacitor plates and the work of the builder of the Swiss Testatika machine. Just my opinion but that looper might be a version of the pulse led out research .a Chinese guy mad a wheel and found that if you pulsed once you get three back .the heavy fly wheel would absorb the kinetic energy from the pluse and run the DC generator .the board would control the pulse timing .a1000 watt pulse would return 3000 watts in kinetic energy .spread that energy around the pancake motor coils to reduce general over loading of a single .point .but the Chinese version doesn't use iron cores .this is a lot like bedini's first self runner but he adjusted it for one battery .and ran for 15 years .what if he adjusted it for ten ? James! During my many years of hands on Electrical Contracting and Researching electrical phenomenon, my first real brush with the Neutral Spike was while designing small electric motors in 1981. This was a tall stack shaded pole motor that was designed to be reversible by switching the position (electrically) of the capacitor in series with the start windings via double pole/ double throw reversing switch. This new prototype motor was MFG in Chine and test samples were shipped to me for QC testing. Destructive testing included the reversal of the motor while running full speed forward via switching the reversal switch! When switched the double throw switch literally exploded with a loud WOOOMP! and a bright green flash. (vaporized copper). I had a double EE Professor from UT Arlington come over and observe the phenomenon. since the whole 1/6th HP motor was being run off 18ga. zip cord with earth bond ground wire to motor frame, it was quit bizarre to see a 30 amp rated switch just explode. His calculations could not explain where the burst of energy came from. After welding the contacts of several heavy duty reversing contactors and examination of the original motor schematic with the wiring as received from China ,I found that the little lady in tennis shoes (assembly line Chinese lady) had placed the reversing circuit and switch on the neutral side of the line input. In effect (when in transit) the entire motor electric circuitry was in an isolated state (floating neutral) condition which is a great big NO, NO, This set up the perfect scenario for the neutral spike from earth ground to occur. I have written all this up several times before for this EVGRAY site. Most people do not understand how shaded pole motors work much less how you reverse their rotation. You have to reverse the rotating magnet field by phase angle 90 degree leading or 90 degree lagging (start windings) relative to the main run windings. I have no access to the history, as Yahoo, screwed us, when they sold the farm.Darrell has been the only link to the old files.Your old files, especially things like rectifying infrared spectrum waves, have not survived for me.Now, that I am in a position to really appreciate the usefulness of all the spectrum, which can be converted to electrical energy, then back again to heat, for instance, it is now more than ever, useful, in a very practical sense.Being completely free to move frequencies of the electro magnetic spectrum, back , and forth, with low loss has enormous advantages to day to day life.The waste that goes on simply because of an awkward to use spectrum of the frequency range, is incredible.Detectors of various elements of the spectrum can pose serious challenges. Dave, Try it and find out, you have an LCR meter? If not they can be had for not much money these days. Air does not saturate but adding a core increases the inductance. Warren, Never tried it with aluminum, only copper but your results would make sense as zinc-copper=brass I think copper and aluminum are diamagnetic so the slowing results of the dropping magnet could also be the phase conjugate of the motional B field. Though the nickel in stainless is said to block the magnetic field while nickel is ferromagnetic- go figure. Aluminum cookware does not work on an induction cooker but does slow a magnet, there must be more to this than just eddy currents unless its the eddy current impedance or diamagnetics. Very interesting! 316 seamless is supposed to be best for Joe cell. Never played with brass though had to warn friend performing electrolysis of water with brass plates that poison chlorine gas can result. MickI haven't tested it, but it should, just with eddy currents. You know the spherical magnet down the aluminium tube? The eddy currents nearly stop it. Same is true of brass.I did do most common metals as tube/ magnet eddy current tests, including brass. In effect (when in transit) the entire motor electric circuitry was in an isolated state (floating neutral) condition which is a great big NO, NO, This set up the perfect scenario for the neutral spike from earth ground to occur. I have written all this up several times before for this EVGRAY site. Most people do not understand how shaded pole motors work much less how you reverse their rotation. You have to reverse the rotating magnet field by phase angle 90 degree leading or 90 degree lagging (start windings) relative to the main run windings. Hi Dave, Using good conductors as core or even just as a shorted winding around an iron (or air) core reduces the inductance. Shorting the secondary of a transformer cancels the inductance of the primary coil. Warren good point, about the eddy current.
Oh way back you wrote about grounding a solar system....I like to keep mine floating but have ground wire surrounding panels to collect static.My home wiring is left as is with neutral grounded at many points through appliances.I found it impossible to get it all floating.I recommend using a isolation Tx on your inverter to home wiring so you inverter and batterys won't become hot!
My cable internet uses a ground and needs 12 volts DC for the modem from my solar DC and caused havoc without the isolation.

After welding the contacts of several heavy duty reversing contactors and examination of the original motor schematic with the wiring as received from China ,I found that the little lady in tennis shoes (assembly line Chinese lady) had placed the reversing circuit and switch on the neutral side of the line input. In effect (when in transit) the entire motor electric circuitry was in an isolated state (floating neutral) condition which is a great big NO, NO, This set up the perfect scenario for the neutral spike from earth ground to occur. I have written all this up several times before for this EVGRAY site. Most people do not understand how shaded pole motors work much less how you reverse their rotation. You have to reverse the rotating magnet field by phase angle 90 degree leading or 90 degree lagging (start windings) relative to the main run windings.
