Hi Kone,

It doesn't seem to be possible to attach files or upload photos to the EVGRAY forum. I tried to visit another Yahoo group. That group made it possible to click "Upload" for uploading files or photos. If my memory isn't too bad I remember it was possible at this group to do so too. I do find posts where I uploaded images or files in the file section but now I don't know how to do that any more. 

In emails from our group pasted images do show up! In the archives the messages gets truncated from where the images are pasted.

Sorry attachments do work partly but only for emails sent from the group. It was files upload that isn't possible.

 I just did a test, and uploaded a file to files section here...its called "biased invertor" and the link to the file in files is a few emails below this....
 Some people cannot view or download files for whatever reason I don't know ...Warren has never been able to view files as example.
 Looks like now some people cannot upload files which I think it is in your case....I still have problem I cannot see attachments in emails but there are sometimes that I can...
 A few years ago, EVGAY ran out of file space, so I made some new groups just for more file space (EVGRAYTOO  EVGRAYTOOB and EVGRAYTOOC)
 And there are lots of files in those groups too (that I need to copy onto my flashdrive as well for safe-keeping in case yahoo collapses overnight which it might do)
 Since making those extra groups, yahoo changed the format to "NEO" and now there was much more file space added-on to all the groups so now EVGRAY files works for uploading (it should) but in your case looks like some yahoo glitch again or browser issue I don't know.....
 The files take some time to load, wait to see the notification here on the board too.

Exactly. Over here we use SI units. Some others countries are still using the old imperial units or other old units that need a lot of correction constants. Hz is 1/s = s^-1 or per second. Cps is cycles per second.

Only after one second! 60cps = 60Hz is a full cycle in 1/60 second or 60 cycles in one second.

This is only true for a one second long period of time. A longer or shorter period gives more or less number of pulses at the same frequency.

About the thyristors it says apply according to their datasheets and use protective network.

 I think I can help you here in what Hector writes:
 60cps means 60 "cycles per second " (cps)
 So, 60 cps = 60 hz
 

 When looking at AC frequency, the hz frequency means the full cycle, both positive and the negative sinewave will equal one cycle....
 

 In 60 hz, a full AC sinewave = approx. 16.6 milliseconds, a half sinewave = 8.3 milliseconds (what I see on my scope at least!)
 

 I like to think milliseconds, to divide up the sinewave.....one millisecond equals 1/1000 of a second (one thousand milliseconds in a second)
 

 So it looks like Hector is trying to say 12ms length of time for each cycle of 16.6milliseconds to "collect" from the diode plug into capacitors, 
 

 which also would mean to collect into caps 6 milliseconds of each half-wave of 8.3 milliseconds, either the positive and/or negative wave of the AC cycle....
  
 So also, it looks like he is saying to leave 2.3 milliseconds "full OFF" time between cycles for switching times and caps to settle down or whatever else such as collapsing field spike to manifest and be steered with diodes or switched into other caps as well (other subject the flyback stuff)
 

 So at 60hz, 6 milliseconds to collect from positive wave, wait 2,3 milliseconds, now collect from negative wave for 6 milliseconds, then wait 2.3 milliseconds, then do it all again.....I don't know exactly where you would want the zero-point of sinewave to fall on that 2.3 milliseconds off time maybe not exactly in the middle of the 2.3 milliseconds, so this you can play with in experimenting....
 

 All this about the collecting of the energy into caps - discharging caps another story!!
 Just do the discharge with caps isolated and disconnected from the diodes and inductors - discharge caps all by themselves so not reflection during discharge....
 

 I would suggest to have ,two  Half-bridges (or single steering diodes) and TWO cap banks that collect the energy.from the same source.....so divide up the energy you collect immediately into two separate cap banks, 
 

 So send all the positive-sinewave energy into one cap bank, all the negative sinewave energy into the other cap bank.......this is what Hector says to do....
 

 If you wish to use a FWBR, now you will  collect the full sinewave, and there is no distinction between positive sinewave or negative sinewave energy!  
 

 In this case you can collect full sinewave for as long as you want (not dependent on half-sinewave time)
 

 And have TWO FWBRs, one feeding cap bank A the other feeding cap bank B and you choose the output frequency and on-time for cap discharge but just make sure cap bank A continues to  fill up while cap bank B discharges, 
 and cap bank B continues to fill up while cap bank A discharges....also good idea to have that 2.3 milliseconds of pure OFF time between discharges....
 Just MAKE SURE caps discharge all by themselves, with no connection to diodes or inductors that filled them up...."decoupled" caps they are called....

Hello Douglas,

that is very nice that you want to help me, I've read again yesterday evening all the posts pdf of Hector times someone has taken together.

From 60cps to 30cps I do not understand. The diode plug splits only that means for me 60 positive half-waves and 60 negative half-waves. And not 30 full waves, except I trigger only every 2 times.

The diode plug is not reflective to the source, only the energy from the capacitors is consumed if not more than that, no additional energy is required from the source, merely operating this diode plug causes additional power consumption from the source. The higher the load, the lower the power consumption.

Even if I want I can not discharge into capacitors I've tried it, the current increase is so steep that I've broken a Powerthyristor, if only with very small capacitors.

I think every positive and negative half wave is charged up to the peak and then discharged to zero crossing, the problem the coil is trying to maintain the current and will only turn off after the zero crossing.

Unfortunately, I do not know how I can measure with the oscilloscope if I see that is switched off properly, where could I connect the probes?

Maybe you can tell me something about this text.

I really only need one way to shut down the SCR faster.

 variable resistor from FULL peak to low 0 triac shutoff point .
  
 SCR must be tailored to SWITCH at PEAK and its DISCHARGE unto a LOAD must reach
 NULL state & switch off before recharge cycling starts again , else alike you
 have it will NOT switch off or it will ejaculate its capacitor charge

 OU! ).

 non-reflective to Input , the shorter the pulse with more load greater amperage
 , higer frequency (smaller pulselenght)
 Dimmers use Reactor with capacitor for delay , but to EASE design
 a 556 (Dual 555 timer) can be used as sense and delay synchro clock
 to regulate extraction , then see how we can get the energy out within the 1/240
 time segment in EACH sideband conserving OU potential within circuit design
 (1/300 much better ) if we can cut SCR off before hitting beyond the null
 region .
 BE clear it will try to do this at his own as your SCR will cut off
 at its turn off voltage sumed to battery one.
 You get 1/4 sine downslope sawtooth waveform truncated before reaching 0 Volts
 delayed 3 to 7% to null time region .
 Farad , Volts discharged to Load (Ohms ) gives you Pulselenght ,duration &
 amplitude of the "Magical" Sawtooth

 OK read those Hector posts - a lot of it is making it so SCR switches on and off at just the right as Hector likes to use those since they are so indestructable but the way the gates trigger in them (to me) is very tricky thing to do because the gates only turn off with zero voltage, and so I have never used SCR switches....
 

 I would suggest perhaps you make a nice sinewave peak sensing circuit where you can trigger on and off the gates exactly where you want within the sinewave, and also be able to adjust the pulse width too. And then if you want or need to use SCRs, perhaps the sinewave peak sensing circuit can trigger the gates for you via small mosfets....(see circuit link below)
 

 I like where Hector mentions think of the AC sinewave as two DC pulse circuits, one positive one negative....Now just work on one half, extract the flyback into caps via steering diodes, have ON--time filling caps just so, have the ON-time of discharging caps just so...once you get one half then do both halves....and keep that couple of milliseconds full off time between the switch overs from positive to negative mode.
 

 Here is a sinewave peak sensing circuit that finds the time you want to turn on mosfets during a sinewave (at peak or before or after peak anywhere you want)
 And also you can adjust the pulse width time too with it....the third chip (4093) is a chopper-chip and you can bypass this by connection to the J3 junction wire:
 Perhaps this can be what triggers the gates of SCRs via small mosfets??
 Perhaps you can just use HV mosfets with 4 or 5 paralleled to handle more amps, in place of using SCRs?
 

 "I think" Hectors SCR triggering operates in a sort of "automatic" mode, where the SCR must have zero voltage at the gate, to turn off, so it relies on the sinewave zero voltage points as when actually they will trigger, then somehow you need to delay or advance that zero-voltage "point of reference" via light dimmer switches or the other means he writes about....
 

 I think lots easier to just have a special gate-triggering circuit for the sinewave and have that gate triggering circuit very easily adjustable as exactly when and how long the gates of your switching will turn on and off...
 

 here is the sinewave peak sensing circuit Ron Pugh made up and it works very well as I have tried it out and so have others too - it is easy to build, and for the power-feed and sinewave that you use to trigger it with, you can for example put the high impedance/HV side of Microwave Oven Transformer parallel across your system, then very simple use the low impedance/LV side of your MOT to trigger this sinewave peak sensing circuit (over on the left side of the circuit where it needs 9V or so AC to feed into it) 
 but again, this is for switching mosfets, with a mosfet driver but maybe like mentioned, use those mosfets to switch SCR gates is my idea if you must use mosfets:
 If you want to have the positive sinewave cycle and negative sinewave cycle isolated from each other and independent to fill up separate cap banks, then use a half-bridge instead of FWBR, and make two of these circuits:

 Exactly. Over here we use SI units. Some others countries are still using the old imperial units or other old units that need a lot of correction constants. Hz is 1/s = s^-1 or per second. Cps is cycles per second.

This applies in each case to the positive half-wave and the negative half-wave.

At 50Hz everything is slower luckily.

We are talking about 1/200 second for the discharge and 1/200 second for the charge of the diode plug.

That means I have 5 milli seconds to load and 5 milli seconds to discharge it would be better in 4 milli seconds.

So I was loading and unloading properly every cycle. OK.

I would like to force the thyristors to switch off earlier.

If you could not install a class B commutation because I would switch an inductance anyway, you could switch a capacitor parallel to the cathode and the inductor. So that one triggers only a short pulse but then should be huge.

It is 1/4 of a cycle or period no matter the frequency.

The D3 or D4 diode was conducting as it had the around 0.8V or so across it. First when the voltage has decreased to zero there will be no current through it. This means the choke L1 is working in continuous mode and the current through it never stops during the cycle. The energy isn't used fast enough or its value is just too big.

Standard thyristors are trigger devices that can't be turned off. They latch after being turned on. The current has to stop entering them to reset. If trying to stop the current through a coil a flyback voltage is generated. The energy has to leave the coil which is done by the flyback voltage. It's better to let the energy stored go to the load or else it has to be dissipated in a snubber to prevent the flyback voltage from destroying something. At least some over-voltage protection has to remove the energy from the SCR and anything else it can smash if disrupting the current too fast. Actually SCRs triggers by avalanche breakdown which just starts the current once again when the tension gets too high.

This could be done to divert the current around the SCR to force it into off state. A transistor could also be used but then the transistor could be used as a substitute for the SCR. But if cutting off the current during conduction the semiconductors have to be protected from the generated kickback from any inductance in the current path. The voltage must increase to the value that preserves the current even if this means punching through some insulation. Compare it to stopping a running flywheel. If stopping it by grabbing it the momentum has to continue even if it means breaking your arm. This makes a protection network is very important.

 The DISCHARGE of the capacitors to the load is non-reflective, but the filling up of the capacitors before they discharge is where you will see reflection back to the input with it going up in draw.
 Capacitor size is very important because too small of UF to caps, 
 now you do not collect all the power that you could be collecting, 
 and too big of UF to caps and now you have the caps working like a resistive load to the system, lugging it up in draw as they fill up between discharges....
 I like to think of the caps a  "resonate-chambers"
 to fill up, then discharge....
 

 Whats good about the collapsing field energy is it fills up caps no problem and very fast with no reflection too,  but again make sure they are not too big of UF....
 

 I would not worry so much about the collapsing field spike destroying everything in it's path and to be  building snubber circuits and such, instead just use ultra fast or hyper fast HV steering diodes to steer and guide that "destructive transient" flyback collapsing field energy into capacitors, then always discharge these capacitors when capacitors are 
"by themselves": alone, and "decoupled" from the system or you will get blow ups.....two stage cap discharge circuit necessity..
 

 These "collector and discharge" caps will stop doing their job if they are already filled up! (now you can get blow ups since collapsing field spikes are not being collected) 
 So you need to find a good discharge rate to the collector caps for your particular system....
 also.when they discharge, now the backspike collapsing field energy is not being collected during discharge period, (because caps must be decoupled when they discharge!)
 And when not being collected, now spikes have no where to go once again and you can have blow-ups, so good idea to have DUAL steering diodes and DUAL caps, discharge cap A when cap B is filling, discharge cap B when cap A is filling,.....      sometimes both caps will fill at same time for a bit of time too,  but alternate the discharging of caps A and B and never do both at same time.....so with a good cap discharge rate as to where caps never fill up to the brim, and alternating two caps with the dual-system idea, and using very fast powerful diodes you should have a good "backemf recoil" collapsing field recovery system and switching should survive....

Second time sending.

I'm still here. Yahoo is just being unstable at the moment. I see some of the old postings still arriving. Perhaps a line is broken and the postings are delivered by snail mail and then transferred electronically at the other end of the broken line. Or there just isn't enough bandwidth to transfer the day the message is sent.

 I read about this IO group and is good place to re-locate however there is only one person running the show is one downside of it....
 also I doubt the huge archives of past posts will function like it does quite well in yahoo, with being able to search through and read and download any of them,  
 also I doubt all the files will be transferred seamlessly in organized fashion if they can at all....
 In meantime I an putting on flashdrive all the files myself just in case yahoo goes bellyup overnight I am sure they will not care if everyone in yahoo groups loses their files so I am going to save them before hand....already about 80% done in EVGRAY need to also do EVGRAYTOO TOOB TOOC...
