It was a wonderful resource for making stuff. I was a daily visitor too! I helped them identify unusual metals, use my Geiger counter, to check stainless steel, and lead, that may have cone from the nuclear plant, in case it was radio active.Back to those DC motors.Put ten of them in a line on a big long bench.Small lead acid 12 volt battery 5 Amps.Small 12 volt to 125 watt 120volt 60hz inverterVariac 5ampsFull wave bridge rectifierHook up 1st motor and run it at 35 voltsNow take another bridge rectifier, flipped over, so the two DC terminals are opposite, yet attach the ac, to the DC inputs of the brushes to that first motor, trying to catch the back EMF from it, yet prevent the input DC from just running straight through to this next rectifier.Now take this back EMF you are capturing, and connect it to a second motor to run it also, only using, just that captured back EMF.This is where I found it interesting.That second motor runs fine, yet does not increase the amperage draw on that little 5 amp battery!You are going to need a drawer full of 6-10 amp 1000 volt rectifiers, which you likely have, already.Try to repeat, harvesting the back EMF from that second motor, running it to the brush terminals of #3 motor. It should run fine, too.Now, attach another rectifier to those brush wires remembering that the ac legs of the rectifier need to be flipped over each time, so the input from that second motor is separated from the back EMf coming out of #3.Keep going, if # 3 is also working just fine, as it was in my experiment.In fact, they don't just run fine, they run better than fine, powerful and just a bit faster than the last one!Doug Kone and I discussed this capturing of the EMF trick before I tried this.I was having sparks on the brushes with motors I was over working, for some project, and it was Doug who brought up the idea of capturing that EMF, rather than putting a cap on it.I had crates of the permanent magnet motors that I had been using to make wind generators for sail boats of my fellow sailing club members, who saw mine, on Solstice Moon, at our swing moorings.I wrote about this experiment to the EV gray forum, and other than Doug, got no response, nada.I did ten motors in a row like this because I had milk crates of them I had collected.By the way, #10 flipped odd the table when the whole chain of motors was connected, not being fastened down. It was getting 91 volts!Not bad from a weenie old 5 amp lead acid gel cell that had been going for at least twenty minutes, running the tiny 125 watt inverter,that somebody gave me.Power?Good question. So I took several motors, and played with them.I put pulleys, and belts, on some, using running motors to drive others, as generators.It was easy to get 17 Amps of thirty-five volts out of the two, I so belted up.The whole experiment was going on well over 3/4 of an hour, interrupted by friends dropping over to my studio, bringing beer, and gawking at the performance, on the table.It was some time later, that I tried something rash and frankly, stupid.I tried to loop it using the end motor output..... duh! 90 volts DC. What was I thinking?It just popped and smoked rectifiers all over the place.The motors were fine.I was then the phone rang and I was tied up in a big feature film for the next 5 and a half months, and all the toys had to go into the basement storage space of my house next door, clearing the space for my special effects studio workshop.I have been meaning to repeat that experiment again.I did try it again with toy motors. What does that leave?IGBTs?You have to get 400ish volts through the semi conductor very, very, quickly, without doing any damage, to either the component or the signal.
