Curious if there is more to the deep cycle than the larger plates and

Hi Mick,

The plates are different. Starting batteries have big area (grid plates) for lower impedance to give higher current. Deep cycle batteries have less surface area but more robust plates.

With a name like that I was cued for a Mr Natural story.

Do you know who makes good lead acid now?  The only recommendation I get
is the Trojan golf cart ones.  SO the steel connects the plates, is that
hot or cold rolled?

What is a Nitrogen powered sub, how does that work?

How does the degausser work, this really peaks my interest!  What size
was it and did just placing it midships would degauss the whole vessel?

MickIt is just a steel plate, roughly a half inch is good, but anything flat is fine. Cast iron would be perfect as long as it is flat.I have a heavy layout table, and would likely use that, because it doesn't harm the table. I supose a porceline enamel appliance side might work too, doing some dump diving. It is just a flat surface that can handle 600F or so.Use the flat iron bars so you keep the thickness even.You can use an electric melting pot, a steel tin can with welded seams to melt lead in. A used store stainless steel cooking pot will do just fine, heating it on a hot plate. Use your own ideas as it is not hard to melt lead.After you make a bunch, you can solder weld them together with a good big soldering iron and a strip of lead that can be a plate, simply sheared up.You can also just buy pure lead sheet.It is used to make walls in sound studios, cand can be bought in rolls of various thicknesses. Using recycled batteries is attractive but requires good out of doors space, away from kids and animals. Hot lead is still heavy, and try not to spill it on yourself, as it will really be nasty. I am used to casting metals, so I am trying to think of folks attempting this for the first time. Lead is fairly easy, and predictable except pouring in a damp plaster mold where the steam can make it blow and splatter up in the air, dangerously.Cheers Warren

MickYes, I was lucky to know Bernard Hipp as a friend, neighbour, and mentor.I think he was charmed at me building away at a concrete boat, much to the brunt of jokes from naysayers.The degausser seems to be an electro ac magnet which when set on the deck growls away with attraction. It is not large, about an 8" cube that works much the same as a tape head demagnitizer.Left on deck for a few hours, it worked like a charm, eliminating the compass deviation entirely since 1981. He gave it to me, in case of reoccurance.The hydrogen sub was built and almost ready to launch when one night a flight of allied bombers dumped their undropped bombs for the flight home on top of it. From what I gathered, it made hydrogen fuel from seawater, and supplied oxygen to the crew. It was the prototype of a similar type now offered for sale by Germany, capable of extended submersion cruises.Cheers Warren

 Yup! Real deep cycle batteries are at least 1/8" thick plates, some even 3/16", though most called deep cycle are just paper thin. You can cast your own from melted down car batteries on a steel plate mold, with steel bar stock edges. I haven't done it myself, but my friend Mr Hipp did. ( Mr Hipp designed the radio control V2 buzz bombs, the nitrogen powered submarine, and the 3 engined Messersmit before being brought to Canada to work on the Avro Arrow. Hi Warren,

Ha you have one of the big clues for magnetic gating right in front of
you!   Idea being the same as the MEG or VTA or many other such devices,
to leverage the pole switching bifurcation point.

What is the opposite of magnetization?

Growls away with indifference perhaps.

I would have a look at that device and the coil winding.  It probably
has a cap and coil or maybe just a coil but the coil winding and core is
most important.  Most of those devices would burn up sitting on all day
so it's probably a higher impedance if it is not otherwise current
limited, but with a higher impedance it should have less
de-magnetization potential.  I would dissect that thing as much as
possible to see if anything is out of the ordinary such as caduceus
wound coils.

I thought it was some advanced Nazi design or something.  Always
surprising how nature prefers finesse over force.  Those industrial
neighborhoods are great for amazing loft space though now days someone
would probably narc you out for living there with our modern cultural
revolution going on.  It was nice when people minded their own business
instead of being "politically" active morons.  Of course back then there
were the occasional busybodies but not a wholesale encouragement from
grade school of narcing out ones parents.

I wonder what that space runs now.  Before you became a SFx guy what
were you doing for cash while building the schooner? 

I don't know what an armature growler test machine is.  Sounds as if it
is something to test the heating/overheating of armature windings.

Most degaussers are just a coil of wire wrapped around a low reluctance
high coercivity pole piece.  Just surprising you could leave it plugged
in all day and it did not fizzle out.

MickIt looks like a fairly ordinary plain coil much as is used for ac solenoid magnets, built with plenty of Hector's bbeloved steel laminations.Not being so wise in the other possible uses of the device, I made a compact mahogany plywood box encloseure for it, as I was taking it to sea with the ship.Then I potted it with epoxy resin to ensure it would not corrode. It was not an exotic wind. It was a fairly normal, yet sufficiently exotic device that Mr Hipp removed it from to scrap yard a few doors over, from their pile, saving it, as he got me in the habit of doing too.I was in a 3,600 square foot space, in the old victorian CocaCola factory, a sprawling five story complex of red brick with a huge water tower on the roof.When I first moved in, that space was $300/ month rent. I was on the fourth floor, but had a huge freight elevator one could bring even cars up on ( which I did) the ten foot ceilings, with giant Douglas fir beams, were perfect for me.There were weigh scales even set into the floor, cabable of measuring up to one ton, so it all suited me as a perfect place to call home, while I built my ship a few blocks away, on the harbour.
Mr Hipp had his machine shop just across the street, and house next to it.It was at that time, considered a wrough neighbourhood, in the Industrial area near the docks. On the other hand, no one complained when we were testing a blank firing attachment for a machine gun at three in the morning, for my special effects business, or testing a six foot long Buzz bomb motor for possibly using with a hang glider.( worked well, measuring 50 lbs thrust, but glowing a pale orange colour, and way too scary in a hang glider, noisy)So this AC magnet industrial latch of some kind, might be of the same sort of construction as an armature " growler" old fashioned test machine, because it too, "growls" when set on the ferrocement deck, with the cobalt steel wire inside. However, a fine, large scale degausser, capable of neutralizing a 33 ton ship with 7.5 tons of high tensile cobalt steel wire wrapped in a tripple belted triangulaire manner.Cheers Warren

I would have a look at that device and the coil winding.  It probably has a cap and coil or maybe just a coil but the coil winding and core is most important.  Most of those devices would burn up sitting on all day so it's probably a higher impedance if it is not otherwise current limited, but with a higher impedance it should have less de-magnetization potential.  I would dissect that thing as much as possible to see if anything is out of the ordinary such as caduceus wound coils.

The degausser seems to be an electro ac magnet which when set on the deck growls away with attraction. It is not large, about an 8" cube that works much the same as a tape head demagnitizer. I meant to tell on someone narc, grass, give up etc.  like someone

Silly how much crap you had to go through, they love their zoning laws. 
Lex Mercatoria is quite fascinating though as their are reasons for such
things, but then as "persons" one could argue we are all corporatized
fictions as a lien against future debt.  It has a lot to do with the use
of fiat currency that the laws favor the color of law rather than
substance, therefore an act of fiction bestows more rights.  This went
down in the 30's across the globe.

There is something to be said for the purity of capitalism.  They
legalized weed here going on about 1.5 years, how much is cannabis
really worth, well it took all of 6 months for capitalism to sort that
out.  I think it's dropped from 2000 a pound to 500 and there is an
excess so prices are still plummeting.  The taxes people voted on
themselves based on the original value are so onerous on the item it no
longer is a good way to make a living, so much for legalization. No one
was bright enough to make the tax a sliding scale.  Meanwhile the cops
are receiving all this money and still whining they don't have enough.

I thought it was some advanced Nazi design or something.  Always surprising how nature prefers finesse over force.  Those industrial neighborhoods are great for amazing loft space though now days someone would probably narc you out for living there with our modern cultural revolution going on.  It was nice when people minded their own business instead of being "politically" active morons.  Of course back then there were the occasional busybodies but not a wholesale encouragement from grade school of narcing out ones parents.

I don't know what an armature growler test machine is.  Sounds as if it is something to test the heating/overheating of armature windings.
 
 
Most degaussers are just a coil of wire wrapped around a low reluctance high coercivity pole piece.  Just surprising you could leave it plugged in all day and it did not fizzle out.

 It looks like a fairly ordinary plain coil much as is used for ac solenoid magnets, built with plenty of Hector's bbeloved steel laminations. Not being so wise in the other possible uses of the device, I made a compact mahogany plywood box encloseure for it, as I was taking it to sea with the ship. Then I potted it with epoxy resin to ensure it would not corrode. It was not an exotic wind.  Mr Hipp had his machine shop just across the street, and house next to it. It was at that time, considered a wrough neighbourhood, in the Industrial area near the docks. On the other hand, no one complained when we were testing a blank firing attachment for a machine gun at three in the morning, for my special effects business, or testing a six foot long Buzz bomb motor for possibly using with a hang glider.( worked well, measuring 50 lbs thrust, but glowing a pale orange colour, and way too scary in a hang glider, noisy) So this AC magnet industrial latch of some kind, might be of the same sort of construction as an armature " growler" old fashioned test machine, because it too, "growls" when set on the ferrocement deck, with the cobalt steel wire inside. However, a fine, large scale degausser, capable of neutralizing a 33 ton ship with 7.5 tons of high tensile cobalt steel wire wrapped in a tripple belted triangulaire manner. Cheers Warren

I would have a look at that device and the coil winding.  It probably has a cap and coil or maybe just a coil but the coil winding and core is most important.  Most of those devices would burn up sitting on all day so it's probably a higher impedance if it is not otherwise current limited, but with a higher impedance it should have less de-magnetization potential.  I would dissect that thing as much as possible to see if anything is out of the ordinary such as caduceus wound coils.

Most degaussers are just a coil of wire wrapped around a low reluctance high coercivity pole piece.  Just surprising you could leave it plugged in all day and it did not fizzle out.

It was at that time, considered a wrough neighbourhood, in the Industrial area near the docks. On the other hand, no one complained when we were testing a blank firing attachment for a machine gun at three in the morning, for my special effects business, or testing a six foot long Buzz bomb motor for possibly using with a hang glider.( worked well, measuring 50 lbs thrust, but glowing a pale orange colour, and way too scary in a hang glider, noisy)
So this AC magnet industrial latch of some kind, might be of the same sort of construction as an armature " growler" old fashioned test machine, because it too, "growls" when set on the ferrocement deck, with the cobalt steel wire inside. However, a fine, large scale degausser, capable of neutralizing a 33 ton ship with 7.5 tons of high tensile cobalt steel wire wrapped in a tripple belted triangulaire manner.

Most of those devices would burn up sitting on all day so it's probably a higher impedance if it is not otherwise current limited, but with a higher impedance it should have less de-magnetization potential.  I would dissect that thing as much as possible to see if anything is out of the ordinary such as caduceus wound coils.

The real trouble for the building inspectors came next, in front of the judge. Representing myself, I asked the court if my incorporation papers were in order, that I presented as evidence.
Iwas listed in those documents as CEO and President. ( I was prudent to wear suitable costume for the occasion, out of respect for the courts)
I then introduced the question of a corporate entity being able to hire night time security staff, as needed.
The staffing, and facilities of such a staff are the business of the company?
In this case, the CEO and President take on a second job, as night security staff.
Case dismissed!
Building a boat helped me build my profession, my profession allowed me to build the boat. Keeping my living expenses very low, allowed me to do what I wanted to do.
Living like a student, allowed me about $10,000/ yr to buy boat building materials. It took about a year to render that amount of material into a boat with my spare time labour.
I made props and did special effects for television, feature films, commercials, trade shows, theatre, music videos, and even clown acts. I would hire out of work artist friends for bigger gigs.
The whole corporate thing was kind of a running joke between us. The absurdity of creating another person, to put all the blame on, a synthetic entity, as it were, that had more rights, and freedoms, than a person, yet all the ones a person has, show the loop holes, that governments have created, just for those very expensive, smooth operating corporate lawyers, who are paid to constantly wheedle,whine, and wine to goverment ears, to make industry happy, and rich.
Owning a corporation kind of gave me a peek hole into how the structures work, even though my own situation was a joke.
In spite of the joke, the favourable prices from wholesalers, and free samples of exotic materials, and supplies, and tax advantages begging you to stay in businesss, in effect.
You become a political point, or a way point at how good the polititians are performing, as businesses in Ontario.
+ or- one businesss is a big deal, as opposed to a baby, or a puppy, born, or an old guy dying..

I was in a 3,600 square foot space, in the old victorian CocaCola factory, a sprawling five story complex of red brick with a huge water tower on the roof. When I first moved in, that space was $300/ month rent. I was on the fourth floor, but had a huge freight elevator one could bring even cars up on ( which I did) the ten foot ceilings, with giant Douglas fir beams, were perfect for me. There were weigh scales even set into the floor, cabable of measuring up to one ton, so it all suited me as a perfect place to call home, while I built my ship a few blocks away, on the harbour.
 Mr Hipp had his machine shop just across the street, and house next to it. It was at that time, considered a wrough neighbourhood, in the Industrial area near the docks. On the other hand, no one complained when we were testing a blank firing attachment for a machine gun at three in the morning, for my special effects business, or testing a six foot long Buzz bomb motor for possibly using with a hang glider.( worked well, measuring 50 lbs thrust, but glowing a pale orange colour, and way too scary in a hang glider, noisy) So this AC magnet industrial latch of some kind, might be of the same sort of construction as an armature " growler" old fashioned test machine, because it too, "growls" when set on the ferrocement deck, with the cobalt steel wire inside. However, a fine, large scale degausser, capable of neutralizing a 33 ton ship with 7.5 tons of high tensile cobalt steel wire wrapped in a tripple belted triangulaire manner. Cheers Warren

I would have a look at that device and the coil winding.  It probably has a cap and coil or maybe just a coil but the coil winding and core is most important.  Most of those devices would burn up sitting on all day so it's probably a higher impedance if it is not otherwise current limited, but with a higher impedance it should have less de-magnetization potential.  I would dissect that thing as much as possible to see if anything is out of the ordinary such as caduceus wound coils.

    Mick Yes, I was lucky to know Bernard Hipp as a friend, neighbour, and mentor. I think he was charmed at me building away at a concrete boat, much to the  brunt of jokes from naysayers. The degausser seems to be an electro ac magnet which when set on the deck growls away with attraction. It is not large, about an 8" cube that works much the same as a tape head  demagnitizer. Left on deck for a few hours, it worked like a charm, eliminating the compass deviation entirely since 1981. He gave it to me, in case of reoccurance. The hydrogen sub was built and almost ready to launch when one night a flight of allied bombers dumped their undropped bombs for the flight home on top of it. From what I  gathered, it made hydrogen fuel from seawater, and supplied oxygen to the crew. Do you know who makes good lead acid now?  The only recommendation I get is the Trojan golf cart ones.  SO the steel connects the plates, is that hot or cold rolled?

How does the degausser work, this really peaks my interest!  What size was it and did just placing it midships would degauss the whole vessel?

 Yup! Real deep cycle batteries are at least 1/8" thick plates,  some even 3/16", though most called deep cycle are just paper  thin. You can cast your own from melted down car batteries on a steel plate  mold, with steel bar stock edges. I haven't done it myself, but my friend Mr Hipp did. ( Mr Hipp designed  the radio control V2 buzz bombs, the nitrogen powered  submarine, and the 3 engined Messersmit before being brought to Canada to work  on the Avro Arrow. He was layed off when Eisenhower talked our prime minister  into buying  Non functional Bomark missiles instead of the fastest jet in  the World, at that time. Mr Hipp didn't go to the States to work on the  Appolo project like most of his co-workers He then built a machine shop across the street from where I later  started my special effect business.
