Hello everyone,

Since I'm into simple things, I want to build a mechanical buck converter for the high power spikes from a Variac as adjustable inductor and a high power diode in module technology. After the Variac I wanted to install a big Elko for smoothing. About the Variac, I could adjust choke suitable for the battery or any other load appropriate.

I found here a used suitable Variac with 6.5 kva which I wanted to use for it. Since electronics react so sensitive to reactive energy and spikes can not tolerate, I would feed the spikes directly through a FWBR in choke and then smoothen with a Elko, the only sensitive would be the diodes.

The first of which builds a large switching power supply. laughing.
I stand on the old indestructible technology.

SvenGood on you!That is a very interesting area of exploration.I am quite curious about it myself, having some very surprising results using the Variac, bridge rectifier, and dc motor combination.I used it in my work for decades, controlling dc motors that absolutely could not fail, even though the apparatus was often heavy to carry around.I also replaced a brand new squirrel cage type electric motor, that was on a drill press machine that I bought for the work shop on my boat, with a dc motor. The squirrel cage 120 volt would not even twitch the chuck, when plugged into the 12 volt dc to 120v ac inverter.I also tried running it on a 500 watt Honda generator to no joy.It has been now running for years, running trouble free, much more useful, for far more different and various jobs, even as a milling machine, a wood router, and plus able to drill 25 mm holes in stainless steel, which it could never have done before with the ac motor.My only source of power is a set of 40 watt solar panels charging 4'X 6 volt golf cart batteries, while at anchor. It is never hooked to the grid. There is always ample power to use my workshop there.What you are proposing with the buck booster is indeed, very interesting.Simple is reliable, and practical.My Variac on the drill press is 5 amps, and is driving a very ordinary ancient tape drive motor, from an IBM mainframe computer, about 1/4 to 1/3 hp.Cheers WarrenSent from Yahoo Mail on Android

Hi Warren, I find the interesting thing about the Variac, the impedance or inductance of the throttle can regulate what a standard buck converter is not possible.

I would have to reprocess the energy of the pushpull transformer first into a capacitor and then use it to operate a classic buck converter and would again have an impedance problem if the capacitor is charged too much and the impedance increases too much.

I think I will agree with the seller. The Variac can provide 23 ampere continuous load and 30 ampere for a short time. The peak voltage is 300V. The winding can also be connected so that the full impedance can be directly connected without a slider. So it would be a toroidal coil with a very high inductance with a very low ohmic resistance, interesting for many nice experiments.

If really one ignites a mega EMP these are the only devices that could regulate a voltage for resourceful electricians.


Your batteries are your only supply?

4x 6V batteries in series? as a 24V unit?

How many ampere hours does a battery have?

Do you still charge them with the Rene Charger and the few solar cells?

How big is a set of 40W solar cells in watts of final output?

Hi Sven In the case of the boat, which sits at a mooring most of the time, the solar cells do the charging.Under sail, at any speed over 2 knots, 17 amps of 14 volt dc is available from the rotating propeller shaft, from the boat travelling through the water.A big dc motor is belted off the propeller shaft, with a single blocking diode.When the 85hp John Deere engine is on, there are two alternators, a 105 amp Delco and a 120 amp Leaseneville.
The big golf cart batteries are 6 volts each 225 amps.So what I do is put them in pairs, from new, and consider them as 12 batteries in two manageable modules. I then have the 12 volt modules in parallel, giving what I call "the house power" a total of 450 amps.In addition, I carry two more six volt golf cart batteries in a separate circuit for engine starting, operating the electric clutch to the hydraulic system, and engine related operations. Either system can be linked together for any purposes, giving 700 amps of 12 volt dc,£ which has never been needed.Generally, those two 40 watt panels do a terrific job with their charging controllers keeping the battery banks at 13.8 volts all the time.Those 40 kg each, battery must be replaced every 6 years, at a rough cost of $1.00 per amp.I hate using batteries.Cheers Warren

HI WARREN   As far as batterys are concerned you are using TROJANS . Well I use trojans on my solar systemand they are OLD GOLF CART BATTERYS  I get them bring them home & set up my capacitor charging/restoring unit& run the battery(one at a time) up tyo 15.5 volts & leave it there for a couple of hours. After I'M done restoringI fill up the water to good level &use the batterys for 4 to 5 years .when they get to old I go get more USED TROJANS 
The used trojans are $35ea.plus $35 core charge a lot cheaper than NEW!

WernerMy batteries I am using at present are private labled Trojans, although I have used Trojans in the past, these are the same batteries in a different case, at a cheaper price.I believe a company called Douglas makes most of the North American batteries, then supplies different cases for different customers who want their name on the batteries.There is a huge range to their product line, I have been told.I don't care who's name is on the case, I just want the heavy plates, with lots of area. I really hope I can get a self generating system working before I need to buy new batteries.Cheers Warren

.it's a down load .he says your battery's should last for 15 years with
proper charging .not conventional charging . good read .I will find link .

JamesI haven't read that book yet, but am familiar with the charging technique of Bedini, which I have varified as quite valid, using 300 volt pulses.It is a human problem much like the mechanic's car being a piece of junk, or in an older context, the shoemaker's children being barefoot.Sometimes, a few days before launch, the simplest solution is to throw money at an unexpected problem of finding dead batteries. Then there is no urgency, and other problems take over.Actually, living aboard, is far less stressful, as you are there, all the time, thinking about how to make life better, dealing with issues as they come up.A Rene charger works. A Bedini charger works. Not having time to build another, I lent my Rene out for someone to also give it a try.My focus is to get away from lead acid batteries as old technology that is valid, and totally practical, but not what I see as stepping out of the box.There are plenty of energy sources which have not been exploited that deserve closer inspection.The application need at hand, often dictates which one you go after.I just came through a most impressive winter season where working in ancient stone buildings without heat is just no fun at. -27 C.I need heat, and lots of it.The good studio workshop I left in Toronto, is now nicely heated with a heat pump which is working great, allowing the gas service to be terminated.We are seeing a cost savings even though it has been a very hard winter.Electricity is very useful, but very expensive. The trick is to make it yourself, cheaper.That is why we are all here trying to pull bunnies out of a hat.Cheers Warren

My batteries I am using at present are private labled Trojans, although I have used Trojans in the past, these are the same batteries in a different case, at a cheaper price.I believe a company called Douglas makes most of the North American batteries, then supplies different cases for different customers who want their name on the batteries.There is a huge range to their product line, I have been told.I don't care who's name is on the case, I just want the heavy plates, with lots of area. I really hope I can get a self generating system working before I need to buy new batteries.Cheers Warren
