Yes! It worked to my satisfaction!  I had a piece of DC buss bar copper 
(99.9 copper), 36 " long X 3 " wide X 1/2 " thick that I heated and 
"dead soft" annealed to get a  four decimal place .0000 on a DVM.  
Formed the 12 " circle coil with a two inch opening between the ends. 
After forming the circle, had to re-anneal to remove any work hardening 
from the forming process!  (Very important).  Heated  one end with a 
Bunsen burner and cooled the other end with  some liquid CO2 and got 
about 50 milivolts on the DVM across the ends.  The bar resistivity was 
probably  around .ooo1 ohms Ohm's Law said there was about 500 amps 
flowing cause a good magnetic field was generated.   Satisfied me that 
the "Thermonic principle worked!   I had a lot of real neat RF Tank 
coils wound with 3/8" copper tubing that I got from Varian Corp. Dallas 
and the old Continental Corp, Dallas and asked Engineers about how they 
were made.  Same annealing process to lower resistance to lowest 
possible value then they were "silver plated"!  Hector has seen a 
"million" of them!  Lol

But if you have to put energy into it it's not free its a converter of

Hi Norman my friend, It's been my experience in the past when I was into heat treating metals, that you really don't need to go cherry red, just heat it up ( propane torch) until it turns a nice solid gray color. Then quench it, No need to cool it slowly either. Worked for me.

What is the procedure then in order to anneal copper in the way Norm
mentions in order that it become within one percent of a perfect conductor?

Would this be simply to bring it within so many degrees of incandescence
for so long and slowly cool it?

My only experience is oil quenching steel to harden it in a machine shop
I worked at.

Hello Mick my friend, from what I have learned of the difference is, quenching is when you cool a solution treated steel quickly enough that carbides do not precipitate out of solution in a stable way.The work hardened metal is heated to a temperature which is about half its melting point. The grains within the structure re-crystallise into many fine grains. The temperature at which the new grains begin to grow is called the re-crystallisation temperature. In the new structure dislocations can move more easily. The metal therefore becomes softer and more malleable and ductile. When a metal is being shaped by cold working, it may be necessary to anneal it several times during the process. Tempering is when you take that quenched steel and heat it enough to begin precipitating the carbides but not enough to put everything back into solution. Quenched steels are brittle and tempering toughens and hardens them. The reason and process of re-heating work hardened steel and other metals is to make it more malleable and ductile ... hope this helps.

MickJust take the torch and heat it to a grey cherry red. You can either let it sit for an hour, until it is cool enough to touch, or you can quench it in water to remove the scale, and get to work with it right away.In either case, it will be soft.Hammering it, rolling it, swaging, drilling, bending, all make copper "work harden" as was done from ancient times to actually make knives and swords out of copper. Still, it was a poor metal to " hold an edge" , so the ancients added tin to make an alloy called bronze, which could be slightly harder.....and so on into alchemy and metalurgy.Norm is talking about soft copper, which when you heat to a cherry red, you"normalize" the metal releasing all the internal stresses caused by work hardening, and making it into one continuous metal object capable of a uniform ability to carry electrical fields, without nasty local hard spots where it was worked.Unless there are other metals alloyed into copper, quenching will not make any difference to the final product.Iron is a whole other ball game along with all of its alloys, as is alluminium and the entire periodic scale of elements called metals. What is the procedure then in order to anneal copper in the way Norm mentions in order that it become within one percent of a perfect conductor?
 
Would this be simply to bring it within so many degrees of incandescence for so long and slowly cool it?
 
 
My only experience is oil quenching steel to harden it in a machine shop I worked at.

Hi Norman my friend, It's been my experience in the past when I was into heat treating metals,  that you really don't need to go cherry red, just heat it up ( propane torch) until it turns a nice solid gray color. In a resonant "tank" you have three factors. Impedance, Capacitance & 
Resistance.   When at absolute "peak" (lossless region) highest possible 
"Q", X-L & X-C totally cancel out leaving only "resistance", consider if 
your resistance is "lowest possible"!      This is where you wan to be!

Something will then get hot and when the eddy currents in the iron generate enormous heat. I drove my transformer to 35A reactive and then went even though he only for a max. Load of 18A should be driven. At a certain point, only the current continues to increase. The voltage is no longer rising. I noticed that. According to the oscilloscope, the peak voltage drops slightly at higher Qs.

I also have a real Ferroresonanzrafo which is already optimally tuned by factory, even there I could still grab capacity and increase the Q.

But it does not help if the transformer becomes an induction cooker. laughing.
