Warren, Modest talents try convincing someone else of that. Maybe someone else here has the solution as it sounds like a great idea to prove up cores. Have fun with the Chinese unit when you find it, putting your house in order comes first. Like I mentioned before the units can be fragile, I just fixed my broken one with new FET's, desoldering that damn new lead free solder practically takes a blowtorch. The pancake coils require a spacer between the windings else the capacitance goes too high and drops the frequency. They are made to use a small air core coil to run at a higher frequency. Even the stove coils seem to run a bit slow on these units as I prefer them over 25 or 30 kHz as a more efficient transmitter. They have a lot of caps in parallel, something around 6, could try pulling out one on each side. Probably a good idea to replace these caps with some good high Q units anyways. When you use the scope probe set it on x10. One of the biggest problems I have with engineering this unit is the ground loop from my scopeso sometimes keep the ground unhooked for frequency readings. There is a problem with the ZVS circuit in that sometimes it is stubborn to oscillate so may require switching the power supply on and off and endangering the fuse or output devices on the supply. Before I fried the FET's I began working on here taking copious notes and relaying to the group but everyone dropped interest. I think you came upon an epiphany the other day when you mentioned the use of MPPT charge controllers as the interface between an RV or whatever for impedance matching to batteries. MickThe flywheel is working great, as a flywheel, gyroscope, or whatever.I notice a bit of vibration around 1000 rpm, but it levels out as one takes it up.The free run time is pretty good at more than ten minutes.I am not sure how much energy is required to maintain the speed, but it seems a lot less than increasing the speed as you edge up the speed.I think I am going with the dc drive motor just to be able to study this a little better without blowing the breakers.Today I am making the mother of all bridge rectifiers out of diodes with 3/4 NF screw threads on the mount ends and flex wires much bigger than my 250 Lincoln arc welder. I found them in my stuff, much to my delight, yesterday.I will use this rectifier as a stand alone unit for every purpose where there needs to be high amperage, without worry. OK you got an original capacitor 180mF 380 VDC or similar . why not try saY a 100mF 370V into smacking a low impedance coil in series with a puck piezo ? use lexan shield for the blast zone ! and a huge fast switching HI voltage hi amps reverse recovery diode ? or go smaller in caps values an test coils with one end grounded and the other end into at least one foot sphere .... reread my big balls postings .... 10 feet diameter some circuits to follow ....... and the 240FT earth ground node pole .... Hector, As for the experiment, tried with a 4007 then a fast HD diode and three different coils in series with the xenon. One pancake from a inductive cooker, one I wound on a small piece of mumetal from an audio transformer isolation shield and one a switching power supply transformer. Did not notice a difference in or out except with one series coil connected there was a slight change in tone from the strobe at a certain speed with the diode connected vs not. Got headache from strobe and stopped. Sven, These are some strange results. I assume you have checked the lighting wiring for ground faults? Norm, For perfect cancellation in an LC tank as they say in Cambodia- same same- Although as frequency moves the parts value may change from the IW capacitance and ESR on the caps from skin effect lead inductance and such, but for the two field vectors to cancel as far as I am aware it's same same As far as lackluster strobe results I figured as much and I am sure the cap in the strobe is a cheap piece of junk. Also made no attempt to match inductor. I know Dr Tesla was very adamant about super pure mica and silver. As Hector has said many times, you have to have a :perfect match of condenser and coil impedance to get the Xl/XC cancellation @ peak ultra high "Q' of the resonance curve. Fortunately! for magnetos you are working at "very low audio" frequencies since your are dealing with only up to 12,000 RPM which translates to 200 cps (cycles per second). No 'fancy high freq to deal with!
