DougI hope you can see the simple apparatus and arrangement I put together to try to find that sweet spot on the rpm range on my other email.The rpm was quite high compared to any bicycle wheel speeds, one could ever reach.I may well of travelled through the correct speed ande not known it since I was just doing a machinery check out. In storage, snow had gotten into the golden motor and it was seized up, so I had to take it apart, clean it, lube it, and put it back together.I thought I better check it out today doing a full speed run using a little load, a 40 watt incandescent light bulb, and see how fast it could go. Warren, You may want to limit the voltage going to the variac with some GDT's and use the excess the charge caps as the spikes from the magneto effect can cause enough voltage to punch through the varnish on your variac autoformer. These devices are not designed for voltages above the dielectric breakdown which can be a couple thousand volts, not at all hard to reach specially if switching the little motor through fast speed changes or switching the output by shorting the coils. Current capacity may have little to do with it as it does not sound as if you had a load beyond the ability of the first autoformer. JamesThe "Golden motor" is a Chinese made bicycle hub motor, Found in a yacht club bulk hopper, and given to me without the controller as there was none, by a fellow sailor, very interested in my experiments.Looking them up on Google, there is lots of material about them, and they seem popular.It is three phase and very much in the same camp as the Samsung which is waiting for me in Toronto. I found out what's causing all or most of the failures with don't smiths work .its the latent capacitance and induction in the resistors and caps he said some resistors are better caps ! So when you've done your math and really got it right .and go and invert athe proper resistor .you change the numbers due to the hidden capacitance and induction .and fail ..its an invisible problem that you must deal with .at radio frequency these thins happen .so it looks like the slide the coil into the coil trick would be a go self tuning ..and you know your there when you get a lot of sparks all of a sudden .
