I know a little about I R motors I about installing a switch to isolate the brushes from the circuit to see if it would work as a generator but I never got around to it . Anyway IR motors were still available in the late 70's but if I remember correctly the 5hp that we needed at time for a conveyor was close to 3000$ and was special order which was a hell of a lot coin at the time.My boss said no way when he could buy a 5 cap start motor for a few hundred $ We installed the new motor but it would only start with out a load ,we replaced that with a 7.5hp still no start we ended using a 10hp which still started hard but it worked ,but it was probably half the physical size and the price was less than a 1/3 of a 3hp R I. I like to put them on compressors, In my opinion A 3hp IR will replace a 7.5 hp cap start any day of the week in hard start applications and the energy costs are way less. (eg:compressors) I have rescued lots of them from our local scrap yard and I only had a couple that were actually burned up and could not repair with new brushes and bearings . The compressor I have in my shop was the largest head the Princess Auto sold and at 600 rpm required a 5 hp..and at 800 a 7.5 hp. I run it with a 3 hp at 850rpm 120 psi on 140 off Draws 16 amps.

Another cool thing about them is how they reverse direction. Remove the brush cover and you will see a lock screw that holds the brush frame in place loosen that, move the holder the opposite way and the motor reverses no change to wiring or switch required. most have a scribe line you line it up to tighten screw and off and running . the only other thing if the centrifugal clutch links are a worn some you might have to lock the holder with plus or minus a few thou from the scribed line to get full start torque ,and if using in extreme cold on a heavy start keep the belts short or use a jockey pulley ,I have seen them snap new belts in bitter cold . I might still have a old Electric Motor book that explained them better than I can if I can find it you can have it .By the way I am a retired Millwright and Cobbler of equipment And other thing in the late 60's we had 1hp on a old milking machine at home that got harder and harder to start,Tthe first Electrical shop My Dad took it to did not no what it was and told us it was a DC motor and it would never work. My Dad said BS as he used it for years. He than to a Old guy long retired who look like he could have worked with Tesla. In 1945, my Dads auto shop had a 5 HP motor of this type on his air compressor. I was always fascinated with how the brushes retracted and it was reversible.
