DougI have always found your use of carbide grit grinding discs, as rotors, amazing.Do you make the holes in them, to mount the magnets, with a diamond hole saw?
Of  course, they are strong, dielectric, non magnetic, and perfectly balanced, discs, for a pretty cheap price....but hard for most people to work with.Tell us your secret for drilling.Cheers Warren

Hi Warren
Best way is to leave the cutting discs as is, and pinch magnets onto them with disc sandwiched in middle. For example 16 magnet position rotor, would need 32 magnets total 16 each side.
I did cut holes in the rotor I made for the guys in swefen....notning worked but "there is nothing in world a hammer and screwdriver can't fix" so I used a hammer and chisel to cut out rough holes, and then epoxied in the magnets.(1 1/4" wide 1/2" thick) holding them in.pkace with them stuck to brake disc with plastic plate beteeen....afterwards in Sweden I gooped fibetglas stuff to make it look like perfect flat disc and can't see the magnets just for show...also balanced it perfect using lead bits...

DougYou can get a cheap set of diamond hole saws from China, in a kit for drilling ceramics and stone.I bought mine in Canada on sale at Princess automotive, but you can buy direct from China. My set cost about $50 Canadian, or less.I would use a drill press

Hi Warren
I tried them and the carbide metal cutting discs would eat them up. I would of needed 16 of them to eventually drill 16 holes...hammer and chisel then epoxy worked well but doubling number of magnets and pinching them into rotor best way to go. Very strong and simple and super flat

DougOw, what a difficult task, even so.I think a trip to the local friendly water jet guy is in order. Stainless steel cuts beautifully within a few thou.I like to be able to do everthing at home, but stainless complex shapes are hard on the machinery that I have. Stainless works well with magnets, being invisible to them, and plenty rigid.Your off the shelf fiberglas discs are sure rigid and non magnetic, but man, what a skill you have with a chisel..Perhaps cast custom fiberglas discs complete with holes?....Cheers Warren

If you are using Diamonds then use lots of coolant (water) Diamond's are not "forever"They need to be flooded with coolant and run low lower speeds. Then it works good.

CBN works the best for cutting steel or HighSpeedSteel..Stainless also doe's have a lot of Iron..

Stainless works well with magnets, being invisible to them, and plenty rigid.Your off the shelf fiberglas discs are sure rigid and non magnetic, but man, what a skill you have with a chisel..Perhaps cast custom fiberglas discs complete with holes?....Cheers Warren

BTW!  The water cut machines use water at 70,000 PSI carrying sapphire
powder to cut almost any metal and many other material! Used this
service to cut 3 inch thick stainless plate!  Great!

MachinationusYou are sure right about keeping diamonds cool. The ones I have been using are just brazed to the steel tube hole saws. As soon as the bronze melts, the diamond is shed, leaving no cutting action.316L stainless is pretty non magnetic. You can do a very simple, and dramatically interesting test , yourself, if you have a sphereical neo magnet, and a selection of same size tubes, made out off different metals, and alloys.Just hold the tube vertically and drop the magnet down the tube. With aluminium, the eddy currents, will nearly stop the ball in the tube, which appears to float inside the tube when you look down counting the seconds it takes to fall a meter. With stainless 316 L , it drops as if you were using a ball bearing, inducing zero eddy currents.(and Lenz braking)Cheers Warren

Ow, what a difficult task, even so.I think a trip to the local friendly water jet guy is in order.

Hi Warren
I tried them and the carbide metal cutting discs would eat them up. I would of needed 16 of them to eventually drill 16 holes...hammer and chisel then epoxy worked well but doubling number of magnets and pinching them into rotor best way to go. Very strong and simple and super flat

You are sure right about keeping diamonds cool.

If you are using Diamonds then use lots of coolant (water) Diamond's are not "forever"They need to be flooded with coolant and run low lower speeds. Then it works good.

CBN works the best for cutting steel or HighSpeedSteel..Stainless also doe's have a lot of Iron..

Why not just use ceramics ? Or glass or fiberglass plate ?

Fiberglass would be the easy way, and available thanks!Unless you want a conductor..

Why not just use ceramics ? Or glass or fiberglass plate ?

Thanks Warren, did you ever try zinc? I did try 303,304,316 and got mixed results. It may depend on manufacturing process..But it would work much better than aluminum if you could afford it!

You are sure right about keeping diamonds cool.

Hi Warren
I tried them and the carbide metal cutting discs would eat them up. I would of needed 16 of them to eventually drill 16 holes...hammer and chisel then epoxy worked well but doubling number of magnets and pinching them into rotor best way to go. Very strong and simple and super flat

You might find it on the net it's used for circuit boards and some come
with out the copper .also you just might find it for general use in larger
sizes maybe I haven't yet .if you do let us know . some comes out of China .
