For the magician it is technique. For the uninitiated it is called magic. Much technology of today (e.g. radio, TV, cars, planes etc.) would be magic to people living during the Renaissance. For people having the knowhow it is not magic.

Then apply the scientific method to prove or find out what happens. It doesn't have to be religion or magic. Perhaps start a project at some educational institution and let the students/researchers find out what happens. If Joe has a theory explaining what happens has this theory been verified? It could be proven true or false.

That's probably some educational or lack of education problem. Most people are happy about refrigerators and heat pumps without knowing how they work or perhaps not even knowing that such devices are over unity. If just being a consumer why bother. Let others design and make the devices. That's what we have industry for.
