Read all the references that I will post and keep in mind the key word 
INDUCTION.   Studying the earth magnetic fields we run into the fact 
that there is a sea of circulating molten iron in the sub mantle of the 
earth which BTW is non magnetic above the curie temp of iron.  We must 
consider the molten iron moving in circulating flows as a plasma which 
has a very powerful magnetic fields.  The molten iron is highly 
conductive therefore the magnetic field is via induction an in any 
ordinary conductor carrying a current. We also have to consider the very 
real Telluric Currents in the earth mantle.  You cannot pick up molten 
iron with a magnet. Its all in the atomic spin alignment within the 
molecular structure.  As Ole said, a lot of spinning charges constitute
