Hi Mick
Two ways I know of to "amplify" flyback effect, one is to time delay its connection (the flyback diodes) and so it would go:
 1) DC power input connects to inductor
 2) Wait short period (approx. 5 degrees retarded like time of "echo"
 3) Now connect flyback diodes to collect and steer backemf/recoil flyback energy into suitable capacitor or perhaps some sort of load that does not just kill the flyback (lead acid battery for example maybe).
Note that now both DC power supply is connected to inductor, and the inductor is/will be having its flyback energy steered out too....
 4) Now disconnect the DC power supply to the inductor (now for sure the flyback spike shoots backwards, but now no forward current to impede it!)
 5) wait abit again, let the flyback merge(or cohere?) with the actual back emf forces (this would be key and difficult to get just right)
 4) Now disconnect the flyback diodes, as its all over now, and do the next DC pulse to inductor and do the whole sequence again.....
So there is that - konehead theory "says" you have amplified the flyback by using a time delay to cohere it to the inherent and elusive backemf force.

Other way is to combine the flyback energy from pulsed DC inductor A with induced and rectified to DC generator pickup coil winds of inductor B sharing same core and slam each together with both in DC going same directon,,, try and get them to merge or cohere using time delay and pulse width....Note induced generator pickup winds around, or behind, or within (bifilars for example) the primary winds will also :pickup the flyback spike energy as well as the usual steering diode approach...so might as well combine them..
That's all I can think of now...
