In one of the videos he show that there is an air gap at each leg of the ring core (double U-core) made by two small pieces of paper. It's the video of the number four lantern where he splits it apart at the end. He also shows how to find the NMR of a core in one of the videos.

If not removing the energy while keeping on adding pulses to the primary coil the core will go into saturation. If the output is of too low resistance it can't absorb the energy fast enough which only increases the magnetization. At some point the inductance decreases when the core can't conduct anymore magnetic flux.

 The auto generated subtitle translation of this video isn't too good. The negative biasing happens while the transistor is supposed to be forward conducting by having positive base signal. The current through the winding isn't shown to actual see what happens. Roman claims the effect to be ferrorresoannce which requires the core to actually saturate. It's also claimed that the rise time of the primary coil signal must be faster than the period of the ferroresonant frequency. Such short pulse periods at this low voltage shouldn't saturate the coil unless it is already biased close to the saturation current. This could actually be the case with the unidirectional succeeding pulses. Roman doesn't show the phasing of the primary to secondary coils. But if the secondary current flows while the primary current is off and the converter runs in continuous mode (i.e. the current never goes to zero) the working point of the magnetization can be put around the saturation level (the knee point of the magnetization curve). This allows storing magnetic energy in the core to be able to saturate it by adding only a small amount of extra energy. This is then done by the very short pulse that saturates the core and thus makes the inductance of the windings almost vanish which increases the current through the windings. Roman calls this the inertia of the current. As the current is always continuous through an inductor (i.e. no jumps are allowed) only the voltage across it can jump or change sign to switch the power direction from absorbing energy to giving off energy. But the voltage across the primary coil doesn't change sign. Instead the voltage across it increases to more than the supply voltage by crossing the ground level (0V). As this voltage is greater than the input voltage the energy can't flow from the voltage supply and thus either must exit the primary winding through the reverse biased transistor or exit through the secondary winding. As we don't know the phasing of the windings the current of the secondary can go through one of the two output diodes (VD3, VD4) to either the LEDs or back to the voltage supply capacitors.
