Let me explain the origin of the Burning of Atmospheric Nitrogen 
Generator by Tesla.   Go back and look at his Warden Cliff Manifesto.

The Tesla  designed Generator (See below) used pure nitrogen as feed gas 
and the HV arc electrodes were alpha emitter elements (Thoriated 
Tungsten) to break down the nitrogen in a powerful magnetic field 
yielding phenomenal HVDC output.    This was what the Famous Warden 
Cliff Manifesto was all about.
