HectorIts a bitch, this commitment error thing. My neighbor had a barn like mine, a just hooked a chain to the corner, and yanked her down with the tractor.I am a sucker for beauty. In a world of functionalism, you are right, but I have just arrived, away from a city of 6.5 million. I'm hooked on space around me and the distant vistas to the horizon, unbroken except for the odd herd of cattle, or wild turkeys, and rolling hills. I certainly could have designed a "modern" building with plenty of glass, and likely found the price very similar.Except! Building codes, new construction inspectors counting how many nails I am using, and that railings keep toddlers from falling down stairs, all good, and fine for shady builders, but all I wanted was the building to stay standing, and keep the weather out, as it was. When I found something bad, I fixed it, because I can.The very best thing I did, was buy a used excavator. Although that was a big expense, right after moving in last December, I knew that is the cheapest time of year to buy construction equipment, in Canada. At 200 bucks a day, rental, it would have killed our budget,( actually bidgit, as it is tiny). With the hydraulic claw I made for it, it acts as a massively powerful robotic arm, easily picking up 500lbs, or more, or digging down six feet, if the soil were so deep.It is a great rock picker, and placer, plugging a big stone into a wall, well over my head, as I do my stone masonry, with the ample rock available on the property.I did build a bunker foundation, all right, straight on the Canadian Shield bedrock, of re-enforced concrete. For now, that big barn will not be heated. I await technology developments. I am not so pessimistic that we must always squeeze every joule of energy out of everything, just to have "free" energy, like running the grease out of our bearings, and eliminating the seals. If our energy is so fragile, and precious, needing to self run, perhaps we are not doing it the correct way. It is not as if we don't have viable options, enough to get a surplus of energy. We should now consider sustainability, and ease of maintenance. My feeling is if it costs a lot and looks ugly, it is a poor solution and resolution.Sweat equity is cheap, as long as your bones supply. So far, so good.It sure keeps an old guy like me, fit, and well on the mend, from the horsing around in New Zealand.
The stone barn is the one that will be heated this winter, as my workshop. Windows and doors will certainly help. I have no time before the snow flies to build them, so for the winter, I will do a temporary installation, making do.At this moment we are running a four foot deep trench from the house to supply electricity, and water. Excavators are good! It must be the thickest soil on the property.Bedrock is on the bottom of the trench.Cheers Warren

That's a lot of work  and money put in there might as well go for  a monolithic bunkerized foundation and a choice of available prefab storm resistant winter isolated steel buildings .. floor can be treated with temperature insulated ceramic coat were no heating is necessary  other than the normal heat pumps in the market .

some things are better torn to the seams and made new .... or left as is as a historical museum piece then built beside it ...
