Hi guysHere we have a work in progress, flying in front of dreaded Winter.So far, it is a bit draughty.The foundations were bad, or non existant, so were replaced.The 10"×10" posts were eaten by carpenter ants, and pillar beetles, so they were replaced. The barn board siding was rotten, so it was taken down. The beams were bad, so they have been replaced. The joists have been sistered or replaced. The roof, of course, needs to be replaced.My new workshop, to the right, is a stone mason's playground. I have had to learn to hoist stones, replace beams, and mortar them all back in place, arches and all.45 tons of stone was removed from under the thin concrete stable floor
In order to put in 40 tons of crushed limestone, spray foam, then a pad 5" thick containing a plastic tube heating grid, for in floor heating.
A suitable heat pump, that uses 10 amps of 220 at -30C is arriving this week.I thought heating glycol based water fluid is a suitable test environment for energy experiments.The roof faces South in both buildings, at just the correct angle to get best performance.I wanted to beef up the roof to handle the mechanical loads of the panels.The barns were built in the 1850's in all likelyhood, though, they may be older. I wanted to preserve them as best as I am able, because I seem to always need work space, for various on going projects.I am trying to get these buildings at least closed in for this winter, with good roofs over each, and at least one to be heated.My wife and I are doing most of the work, along with friends.This is what I hope to use the 20 amps of 220 AC power for, if it is possible.Cheers Warren
