A lot o0f education went into the field of maintaining both internal 
combustion engines and turbo jet engines, most important was the science 
of basic fuel products and the heat content of same!  You have to 
understand how hydrocarbon fuels work in the process of producing power.

At the refinery, there is a continuous analysis of fuel products as they 
are produced which tell the heat content of the hydrocarbon based fuel 
product as they add antiknock additives and ethanol blending etc.
