Hector is 100% correct about the construction of the ferroresonant 
transformers. Here are some of the units that I scrapped down. on the 
bench are the air cooled IGBT driver packs and the 5KVA transformer. 
They operated on 48VDC input to hammer out 208/120 VAC output. Tearing 
them down for copper, found construction just as you are playing with.
