Tesla mentions this technique in US382202 and US433702 maybe in others too..

Carbon steel carries magnetic flux about 100 times better than air does.
Soft pure Iron carries magnetic flux about 5000 times better than air does.
And 99.95 % pure Iron annealed in Hydrogen can carry magnetic flux 200 000
times better than air does
