Warren,

In the electric grid are devices to dynamically adjust reactive power
just like one is performing with the RV cap box and switches.  These are
called thyristor switched capacitors and thyristor controlled reactors. 
We should take some circuit design cues from the brilliant engineers who
design the grid and transmission lines.

If one looks into these designs there will be apparent similarities to
many of the circuits discussed here!
