James! Mick is absolutely correct in that you have to create a pulse 
train of Negative, unidirectional DC to get the longitudinal waves. In 
my opinion, after studying the pancake coil winding techniques, I 
settled on the two counter wound coils to duplicate Tels's coil. You 
have to phase cancel the vectorials to get the longitudinal pulses 
(stripped of E&H fields).   The powerful magnetic quench insures no 
ringing in discharge and follows Tesla's early work in magnetic 
rectification. It works!
