Just my two cents I noticed with spark gapping experiments of about 2000v coming from 90 degree to Airgap of n n pulsed dc ucking coils (konehead motor) the distance of sparkgap adjusted precise could make the ac looking pulse and collapse signal suddenly go all humpy dc with just the right Airgap distance. Someone told me Tesla uses to use sparkgaps to rectify HV all the time as no good HV diodes back then.
Also have noticed let's say filling AC cap with AC...when you disconnect charging of it then use cap to discharge to load there is usually nothing there like the forces cancel naturally l don't know 
But if you rectify before filling cap now those joules and potential in there will "stick" and upon discharge you see a good blast of.power. I noticed same thing with my peak coil shorting stuff in that without diodes first to rectify there is nothing when ac cap discharges to a load...
Have you seen Hector's ground rod with large metal sphere capacitor ball in air? This would be interesting to try....maybe restaurant supply store has a couple giant mixing bowls you could put together for sphere...
