Reply to Warren 2, I would note that while you would assume that your boat
would be the perfect conductor for a lightening strike...

The way to stop a Van De Graaff from charging to a full voltage is to bleed
the the charge before it build up, you and your boat might have been enough
to do that.

Reply to Mick 2, I think you are confusing the current spike that comes
from shorting a battery and a voltage spike that comes from the
supercharging effect, where the voltage on closure of a switch lead to a
massive jump in voltage that cannot be explained by any conventional
electromagnetic understanding, and this effect is not reliable or common,
it is not reliably reproduced with normal means, so it involves something
else not normally controlled for.
