If the DC system is going to use mechanical switches at high voltage it may have the same trouble as when using 36 to 48V DC in cars. The arc formed in the switches blow out too late to prevent the contacts from evaporating too fast. Switching AC stops the electric arc each time the voltage change sign at the zero crossings.
