MickWe are having interrupted communications as often I am unable to open attachments on my phone. What you seem to be describing is a device Tesla would certainly be familiar with, and have in abundance, a Model T spark coil.Being able to make use of the high voltage signals from one of these devices would be interesting.I have found the spark, which is about 25 cycles ( guessing) is surprisingly strong, easily igniting a sheet of printer paper, placed in the spark gap. This buzzer runs on 6 volts DC, without Lenz's law draw, or so it appears, as once it goes to the spark gap, there is the end of the battery load to it.Yet that spark doesn't stop there, as anyone knows one the receiving end of one of these coils. What brings this to mind, is that I bought an old new stock one, at a local antique store, in town, for $15., this week.I have always had one around, as they are useful, as well as ornamental, in their wooden boxes with brass and steel steam punk appearance, which, of course, they really are.I have used them in my career for all kinds of movie magic tricks, as I have said, that spark packs a wallop, from that little self contained package.HOW can we use 10,000 volts of pulsed DC?Hector hinted by innuendo that buzzers can be useful.Well these little suckers are super charged 6 volt DC input packages.Playing with the radiant might just be productive, without all the bother of making stuff electronically?Cheers WarrenSent from Yahoo Mail on Android

Great stuff Ole!

There was something called a magnetic rectifier using a vacuum tube and magnet I have heard of but not much info yet.  I found that page about Tesla spark gaps also, nice job the author did.

A great way for a DC HV impulse supply is mechanically interrupted DC charged caps, hard to improve on!  A cap can also be considered a converter between two different types of electricity as it strips out the B field.  Also converts cold electricity back to hot.

Hi Mick,

The Poulsen arc was the kind of arc transmitters used until the invention of tubes. Here is Valdemar Poulsen's  patent (US789449) which use a flame and magnetism to control the arc: https://worldwide.espacenet.com/publicationDetails/originalDocument?CC=US&NR=789449A&KC=A&FT=D&ND=1&date=19050509&DB=&locale=en_EP

 Wikipedia article: https://wiki2.org/en/Arc_converter
 From the Wikipedia article:

   - Duddell arc (and other early types)
In the first type of arc oscillator, the AC current in the condenser i0 is much smaller than the DC supply current i1, and the arc is never extinguished during an output cycle. The Duddell arc is an example of the first type, but the first type is not practical for RF transmitters.

   - Poulsen arc

      - In the second type of arc oscillator, the condenser AC discharge current is large enough to extinguish the arc but not large enough to restart the arc in the opposite direction. This second type is the Poulsen arc.

   - Quenched spark gap

      - In the third type of arc oscillator, the arc extinguishes but may reignite when the condenser current reverses. The third case is a quenched spark gap and produces damped oscillations.

The history of Tesla's spark gaps and arcs: https://waveguide.blog/teslas-spark-gaps-literature-review/
After the spark gaps and arcs came the tube era. Tesla used tubes too according to the story from his nephew about the ride in Tesla's electric car.

Norm,

Great stuff on the VTA.  Always found it suspicious that after the Scientific American released the time reversed light article that all slid into obscurity.  We should be using these mirrors for satellite communications and all sorts of other applications but no.  Seems that maybe wireless power is in the same boat as it should have been widely applied by now with all the carbide fets designed just for this purpose, could it be that loose coupling an off the shelf wireless power device might give away the candy store...

I am very interested in the device you posted about for fire control.  Unfortunately your posts are not parsable by subject matter.  Do you think this application has potential for forest fires and if so what is required to build a prototype?  From the brief description available it appeared to be some sort of air pump connected to a neg ion source.  Do you know the size of the generator used for fuel fires you mentioned?  Is just a series of 15 kv diode rectified flybacks sufficient or are more relativistic voltages employed/required?   Interesting I have not found patent of Teslas magnetic spark gap but the description and drawing are available in The inventions, researches and writings of Nikola Tesla by Thomas Commeford Martin.  There also seemed to be magnetic vacuum rectifiers build for a short spell but have not found much more about these interesting claimed devices that the occasional mutterings.

I know you also mentioned that some Tesla coils can produce this effect so is this a matter of timing of a rectified primary?  Need to get my thyratron up and online, so many chores and so much to build.
