The old timers liked radium because it was very powerful like in the horse
power range. and with a half life of 1600 years you could pass it on to
your decedent's. But it did have gamma radiation . put in a vacuum was one
of the the first uses call a cold cathode worked like a hot cathode
.cascading three together and you got some power but the vacuum would break
down due to the release of radon that came from the radium .so you needed
to reastablish  it every three days .but its lighter than air and go up to
be with all the other radon in the sky.then there was the work of Paul
Brown a paint can size unit putting out 50,000 Watts .same vacuum problems
.but much more energy .that x-ray gamma ray problem could be shielded with
lead glass with a coating of zinc sulfate that would glow from the energy
.real time see the energy .at work .
