Hi Mick
 I see what you mean for very fast switching having a bit of insulator can help the switching speed to cut down on the latching of the cores...
 Hectors Eklin-Brown looper (spun by RV motor) back in the 80s he said that the airgap was super important as well as there must no shorted out laminations, especially at the ends where it is cut-off and the cutting process will create the shorted laminates...
