 When you write car batteries perhaps this means the Tesla car batteries - I am sure you know about the "power wall" that Tesla sells now which is more or less like the batteries in a Tesla car arranged vertical to run homes off grid..
 Regular car starting batteries become bad after only a few full discharge-charge cycles...they are only made to be constantly charge via car alternator all day as you drive, and only purpose is to delviver for a few seconds a heavy amp blast to the starter motor a few times a day....
 Golf cart ("traction") batteries are made to be discharged and charged up again every day for 5 years, maybe 8 years if never any problems develop...
 So these are the batteries of choice in off-grid homes and such.
 It would be nice if converting them to Alum instead of the acid solution will give similar performance not sure but I"think so"...this would be nice feature to not pollute peoples homes with lead acid battery fumes and remove the danger of splashing or leaking acid...
 Inductive flyback sorts of battery chargers would be best like the Bedini wheel (ask Warren how "overunity" they can charge up a whole marina full of boat batteries)
 Warren would run his bedini wheel on small 4ah or 7ah 12V battery for a week - it only needs to rotate very slow around 100rpm....then charge it up in a few hours during the end of weeks use....in meantime he has charged up very happily maybe 7 100AH boat batteries that boat owners use to run lights and stuff on their boats with....
 So a pretty good practical overunity battery charger I think however it is restricted to lead acid types... (but maybe Alum too) They extend battery life too, because instead of heavy currents to charge, they use the flyback spike..
 As for just when to take battery out of running loads, and at what level of depletion would be time to recharge it, I would run my loads through an invertor, and when low voltage buzzer would go off, t(11.7Vdc) hat's when I would recharge it again...
 For lcharge-level to go to for the recharge.....I would use a battery-resistance meter (60 bucks on ebay) that measures the internal resistance of the battery so you know for sure it is fully charged.,...once I know the voltage  level that this corresponds with, then you can do it simpler and just use voltage level to decide when to stop charging...(13.5 or so volts).
 Anyways I would think with a bedini wheel type of flyback spike charger, and golfcar type lead acids, you should do fine with only using 2000W (at times) to run a house and its appliances...
 Heating the house is problem through winter  -  Bart;in Toronto's  heater you know some details about would be ideal just a couple solar panels and you can heat regular size house on couple solar panels .
 Spin this with a rotovertor motor, now have also the rotovertor motor charging batteries up too, through its run cap phase via series transformer....Somehow you need to convince Bart to let you guys work with and manufacture his heater design he doesn't want to give away details since it is easy to copy..
 Hector has some LED inventions supposed to be most efficient LEDs in world....
