 Here is good website explaining at least how common portable ]brush-commutator AC gensets work and there is simple schematic explaining the rotor (field coils), 
 the rotor coils must become a DC electromagnet and this why the diodes anyways t
 his is a start in figuring out the generator you have probably the same thing more or less to it if it makes AC and has brush-commutators.....see if it is 2 pole or 4 pole to the rotor maybe:
