DougWhen trying to use an old genset generator, the first thing you discover when you figure out how to separate the generator unit from the motor. This is a tricky thing for the novice.A long draw bolt goes through from the end of the armature shaft into a male taper of the gas engine crankshaft.Once you undo all the bolts you will find yourself with a generator, all right, but it has no shaft sticking out on the engine side, or is there any bearing on that end of the generator armature, because it depends on using the the engine crankshaft bearing which gets direct coupling to the generator, very securely. What is a guy to do, when he wants to drive the generator with something else, other than the gas engine it was designed to connect to?Believe me, it is a bitch of a problem. In my case, I machine a tapered one end stub shaft on the lathe, complete with internal female threaded hole to take the drawbolt. The other end has to have a bearing land on it.Oh bearing! You need a bearing support connecting accurately to the generator case and centering the shaft. In my case, I got lucky and had a scrap yard across the street with a pile of old electric motors. I found one with the right outside diameter and then turned my stub shaft to fit the bearing with plenty of length sticking out to take a vee belt pulleyNow try the same trick in a third world country with only limited machine shop capability, and resources. This is where my respect for the guy blossoms. He has used the gas tank and chassis of the genset to support the "washing machine" motor so that its bearing is supporting the end of the generator armature. Clever!Enough of the connecting shaft is exposed to wrap a cord around to get up enough shaft speed to get the generator generating enough to run. Wow!I hope we can do as well.Cheers Warren

Hi Mark
I thought I saw a video of him rope-starting his looping motor-generator....
Now I am switching back over to the idea that that is a 220V washing machine motor universal AC/DC type, and the genset generator is the generator of the two...
You can hear the generator slow a little bit from the lenz law lugging of the light when he plugs it in....so this makes me be more sure it is real thing. The motor probably over-powers any lenz law effect, at least up to a point it will...
