I looked up car alternators as motors, not such a good idea to do that - perhaps permanent magnet type will be ok but you would need some sort of pulse timing and whatnot to make them go....
I have changed my thinking today in that I think that alternator-looking thing to left is a AC/DC universal washing machine motor, like smokey is saying....the type that will run on 220V
I have genset in Seattle just like that, I took off motor and in place made a 1" thick plastic plate to mount on the now-opened up end and put bearing in middle now....
the idea to use that washing machine motor/car alternator-appearing motor to support the one side of the genset is very good way to do it I think and better than how I did it...you can wedge cardboard or whatever all around the rotor, hold it in place good so perfect airgap between rotor and stators and then weld it all up happily...
What I wonder now is his wiring I will guess single phase from generator, and the motor runs on single phase and it doesn't care about being synched up to sinewave together it just does what it does because it is not a rotovertor motor or induction motor, but rather a brush-type universal AC/DC washing machine motor and lots of different frequencies of AC make it run (or plain DC!).....
Maybe that black square thing on top of genset with the wires in and out is a FWBR!!! Now it gets real simple....just slam the DC into that washing machine motor.....
most probably he took out the diode or whatever it is in the genset that makes it not produce electricity until first the rpms are up to sinewave frequency you want to make - my genset like that is also 2cycle gas motor run (took this off) and it is 2 pole motor so I need 3600rpm to make the 60hz sothe genset will then make power - unless I was to take out that zener diode (or whatever it is), now it will work making AC any speed you want....
I bet he took out that diode, so it does make juice at any speed....
