 Planes have avoided the North Pole for various reasons, including the lack of safe landing areas, magnetic variances that can confuse devices such as compasses, and the worry that jet fuel could reach freezing temperatures.
 

 Until recently, passenger jets have been prohibited from flying over the North Pole due to restrictions limiting them from flying anywhere that is more than three hours away from a safe landing point. However, new improvements have allowed planes to fly in areas that are up to five hours away from a safe landing, allowing for a polar route that could shorten the time for airplanes to reach some destinations.

 There is no legal no-fly zone for the North Pole, in fact, the FAA has specific guidelines detailing what safety precautions one should take when flying over the poles.
