Hi Warren With AC motors usually you need to spin the motor to a specific rpm so it will latch up witb tbe A C sinewave using an external "pony" motor to do tbis...tben disconne the pony motor afterwards. Exampke 4 pole AC motor with 60bz sinewave needs to be going 1800rpm. Of course different with rotovertor since it can start from stop using start caps. So to make tbe motor in Hectors drawings loop, in or order to spin by itself, the "sweetspot" in frequency of self resonance (whatever ypu call it) needs to be also a specific frequenxy of rotation too. Maybe octaves or harmonic 5ths will be strong emough... I think the sweet spot in frrquency for less draw and mucb more power has similar effects asThane Karl Heinz delayed lenz effect where according to Woopys tests a few years ago with a 16 mag ns rotor and 36 ohm coil needs 2100 to 2300 rpm to get it to speed up umder load...so 2 pole rotor needs maybe 16 to 17k rpm range this why hopng octaves can work tpo so drop it down x12 or x24 less? Hi DougYour Muller is similar to Hector's drawing, except the magnets come at right angles to the gap in the core if the coils were united by their cores in a horseshoe on either side of the magnet containing disc. Your same array of coils sit on that laminate core.The advantage of the disc is that you can have an unlimited number of magnets sequencing through the gap, like carbide teeth in a saw blade, with Hector's variable speed motor, choosing the frequency.Because of the number of magnets(easy to obtain little disc type) the rotor disc need not turn so fast, keeping everything nice, and practical, using normal stuff, like permanent magnet motors.I put up those pictures of the aquarium pump being driven by a weird method, of ac motor, I haven't seen many examples of. It is driven by eddy currents and is an eddy current motor. They were used to drive the old analog electric energy meters. The principle is like that used in Tesla's asynchronous induction motor if the iron of the rotor is omitted or exchanged to a nonmagnetic electric conductive material. OleThank you, I did think it was a strange little motor.I never was able to run it, though it is very well made, and nothing wrong with it. I picked it up at a scrap yard, as it was likely brought to Canada, from the UK, where it was a fish bubbler. I wouldn't discern between magnetic and electromagnetic as they're both present and two sides of the same cause. But the efficiency of the fields depends on the size of the motors as the professor demonstrates. Laithwaite calls the moving field a magnetic river. The conductive metal rotor is a hysteresis motor. Hi Warren, "Perhaps, I should just use my handy dandy Rotoverter capacitor tuning box, and experiment?" Yes. Good idea. Else use a run capacitor from a one phased motor. It's same principle. The capacitive value must be big enough to let enough current through. It only needs to be phase shifted. A small value capacitor limits the current too much. If the voltage and frequency isn't specified put an incandescent lamp in series with the coils or use a variable transformer to find the proper operating voltage for not heating the coils. One coil goes directly to the supply and the other one has the capacitor in series before going to the supply voltage. I never was able to run it, though it is very well made, and nothing wrong with it. I picked it up at a scrap yard, as it was likely brought to Canada, from the UK, where it was a fish bubbler.
