I setup a government free phone to run Touch Ubuntu because I don't like
Google or Apple to be able to switch on mics and cameras and location at
will, I find it reprehensible.  Lots of little niggling issues though so
I have moved on to Linaem which is basically an open source version of
Android without the link to Googles invasion play store linking
everything.  If you have an I Phone just consider the Chinese secret
police can watch everything and with google Android the no such agency can.

Looks like Ron runs Mint a flavor of Linux known for it's small
efficient builds.  The OS's are all free and easy to find, you might try
running Ubuntu or Kubuntu on an old laptop just to try it out and get
some insight to the OS.
One can even find versions of Unix of VMS free to use.

If you have an IPhone it's time to get away from that company as they
promote Chinese companies that require High School kids to work for free
or not pass their High School.  There is another name for forced work
without pay, slavery.

 I am on a desk top and Mint is really my answer, I love it not being tied to windoze. I have a win7 machine for, "things I can't get otherwise" but it hardly ever runs (eg: taxes)
