Hi DougI am designing the next daisy chain experiment.For fun, I am thinking of driving it with one of my 3 hp RV motors, being unusual for me, to use it as a motor, to drive a DC motor, being used as a source of 35 volts DC, by the right selection of pulleys and belt to get 35 volts output from the permanent magnet motor, being used as a generator.I will just do a bench run on the selected motor, driving it with yet another dc motor rigged to a Variac and rectifier variable speed drive, to get the required rpm for my chosen voltage output(with load)Last test, I ran at 35 volts.After ten random dc motors, down the line, the last one was reading 95 volts as I recall.It was at this point, I screwed up, trying to loop the experiment.Instead of the expected looping, I fried the diodes, as if doing a dead short.The idea of using the RV is a bit silly, but, what the hell, I have it, and just for giggles, lets give it a go.My main idea is to clean up the garbage that is coming down the line that can blow diodes, whatever that may be. Making new dc at a clean source like a dc permanent magnet motor running at a certain speed, that produces a voltage, and amperage, that a stock inverter can work at, delivering what an RV needs, which in my case, seems to be 120 ac, (normally less than 5 amps)Lucky for me, I seem to have a good supply of big dc motors in my collection!I may even employ some big gear head dc motors, just in case the heavy oil drag, and gear box, raises the spark voltage off the commutator. The motors range from 1/3 hp to 3hp.Dc motors all need to be checked for mobile magnets, as they are actually very delicate due to temperature extremes, and moving, getting even a little bumped around.In such a case, you can hear a clunk! When turning the shaft by hand. That means taking it apart and re- gluing the magnets inside the housing.Use super glue, or better, epoxy.Look carefully where the old glue marks are. Hi Warren I did lots of tests of dc treadmill motor spun by rotovertor motor and putting various loads of resistance on the treadmill motor. Main problem was the RV motor stalling as it slips out of the sinewave latch easily trying to overcome Lenz law in treadmill motor working as generator. It came to be about 30uf on the RV run cap to give good torque to RV shaft, while the resistance of treadmill motor working as generator was best efficiency at 30ohms. Kone
