The barn board going on

Hi guysThe big hundred and seventy year old barn is getting a new lease on life, along with the stone barn, which is to be my workshop.It has been a huge job this year, to do this before the snow comes.You can just see the heat pump mounted at the extreme right of the photo. This is a air to liquid heat pump which can take heat out of the air down to -30 C. This heat is stored in an ordinary electric domestic hot water tank, and then circulated through high temperature plastic tubes cast inside 5" of re-enforced concrete floor.It is underground cable grid power for now, but since the roof faces just the correct angle to the Southern sun, I want to put solar voltaic panels up there.Since I have the resistance elements already, in the hot water tank, they would be an ideal way of testing Rosemary's 17x circuits.The big barn roof is getting replaced in a few weeks, with heavy ribbed steel, as we straighten the roof rafters up there, and put new strapping timbers to fasten it to.I just have to put another window in the stone barn, and fit the doors in place. Oh, and a wood stove, to try to burn all the rubbish wood.Getting my machine shop machines, and electronics bench back in play will be so good.Cheers Warren

JamesThe wind around here is fearsome.It is hard to believe people settled on such a place, I think, sometimes.I designed and built wind generators for years, and used them for decades, before cheap, and efficient photo voltaic panels came out.Like solar cells, they work, but I think we can do even better understanding the true nature of where energy emerges.By all means, exploit everything out there, rather than pay the power company.However, we are very, very, close to solving a major world problem, and should keep at it.Cheers Warren

Well what I mean is that it's free and having two or three ways to fall
back on makes you very free. I'm not stopping till I do that with energy
water food ...clothes I can take or leave them .😂

James Trust me on this, you need clothes in Canadian Winter. Anything out in the breezes just gets frost bitten, and simply turns black and falls off.If you have any doubt, why in the world would Canadians have embraced  prickly wool Stanfield's long johns, plaid flannel shirts, and fleece lined pants? Oh, and Sorrel felt lined boots, a parka, and a toque? We like to survive until at least spring.Last winter I completely disappeared under a snow bank back of the big barn, one morning, hence, the serious need for snow shoes, for tromping across the landscape.Cheers Warren

That's funny Warren i grew up in Michigan and had to wear leather jackets
not to be cool but because it was cold as hell I got lost in a snow bank
once we were jumping off of roofs into them and I got lost for a while
.leather works great with a liner .I been interested in thermal Cline's for
some time now .it seems we build without thinking about natures way of
creating warmth . big wasters. You might put up plastic on you barns and
heat them to continue your work it's would be nice to keep half warm .and
just build over it as a permitant thermal barrier .I heard ist so cold
there that some shopping malls are underground ? Hear about all the Lowe's
closing up there ? Do you hunt ? Must be a lot of deer and moose there .

 Warren you shouldn't speak for all Canucks. We had snow several days last winter but you have to get up early as it can be gone by noon. When the kids were young I would drive them up the Malahat so they could play in the snow,  (did that at least twice but makes a good story) LOL

JamesI hear gunshots as neighbours are out shooting Bambie, or Bullwinkel, depending on the season.I really don't care for venison much, as I find it a bit dry, and free of any fat. Many of the deer around here tend to graze with the dairy herd of my neighbour's Holsteins.I am not much into guns, and killing animals, for pleasure, or sport.I sure don't need to fill my freezer with a moose.The stone barn has walls two foot thick, of solid sandstone, and limestone. The roof jas four inches of, sprayed on the inside, urethane foam. The floor, five inches thick, concrete,has heating tubes cast in, the glycol will be heated and distributed, from an electric hot water tank , not using the elements, as it is being heated using an air to liquid heat pump, that draws the heat out of air that is down to -30 CCheers Warren

RonYou sure have found Canada's banana belt, there in Victoria, a mere 4,000 miles from the frigid winds of Eastern Upper Canada.The wind is unrestricted blowing along the full length of Lake Ontario, and down the St. Lawrence River, trying to blow over the three foot thick stone walls of our house.Luckily, it has not shown much tendancy to be airborne for its 170 years.I now know why someone built barns from stone, given the state of the big post and beam barn, which started to inflate in zephyrs of 80km/hr this spring.I took it on myself to solve the problem of keeping it standing for another 170 years, just because, well, it was there.I didn't need to keep a herd of dairy cattle, store a thrashing machine, and fifty tons of hay, but was struck by the awesome magnificence of the interior space, after the claustraphobic confines of Toronto, except perhaps, those places where I worked, great empty enclosures, film studios, inside of which, could be the teeming market streets of downtown Hong Kong, or a week later, the scene of a battle between giant robots, and earth moving excavators, as far as the eye could see.Big spaces had magic for me, though I never ever imagined being able to own one, let alone, a variety of them. Best of all, one can see a vista in all directions, for miles around, following the movements of sun, and clouds, perched on high land, above the river valley, surrounded by mixed dairy farms, trees, and rolling hills.So side tracked from my energy experimenting by stone, and timber, becoming a stone mason, and wrangler of 20 foot long 8"x8" beams, up into the heavens, rebuilding Nineteenth century architecture, using a lithium powered 20 volt brushless DC screw gun, and high tensile, high tech torx screws, and steel brackets. It is almost finished, except for the roofers coming soon.I just couldn't let that expanse of South sloped roof go without solar panels, when I can afford them.I haven't addressed the 36' highX 20' diameter re-enforced concrete silo, but it is an amazing structure, in good shape, and thankfully, completely empty, unlike the hay lofts, when we moved in.But merely at the other end of Lake Ontario, this is a few climate zones cooler than Toronto, and much worse than winters in Victoria.Cheers Warren

You sure have found Canada's banana belt, there in Victoria, a mere 4,000 miles from the frigid winds of Eastern Upper Canada.
 

 Surprisingly not all that different, Toronto has much the same mean high of 21,6 C against Victoria's 21.8 C
 

 But a little chillier in the winter with Toronto at minus 3 C and Victoria at plus 3.C
 

 But I found the weather there more interesting! I remember sitting in the car on the water front in Kingston and watching the lightening strikes out over the water and all around us... I had never seen such a thing before!!!
 

 Then another time in Montreal, in May, they had had to start the air conditioners in the stores already because it was so damn hot.
 

 But would still like to find something to heat the house and get off that damn oil. Watching your barn heating with interest.

RonI think we can get it off the grid.So far, there seem to be a lot of tangible options, let alone those strange ways out in the fringes.I like this setup, as it poses the most complete freedom of options for exploring various alternatives, comparing the merits of each, by flipping switches, or turning valves, as the case may be.
The goal is a zero with the heat on for the monthly bill.Oh, and chopping wood, charming as it may be, sucks, when it is 20 below, and the stove runs out.I have enough wood to burn for about four years, with an additional supply falling in the bush, in one season, to last another two years.Sure, I could heat with romantic wood, off my own property, for free.But, I'm a bit lazy, and have other things to do with my time, than, ironic as it seems, run around trying to keep warm trundling around with firewood.Cheers Warren
