Jon, I think you will grasp the reality from Warren's experience with 
his neutral potential ferrocement hull boat with the sea water, 
preventing the lightning from striking, the proposal for lightning 
mitigating bouys dropped into ocean will need some thinking as to 
"potential gradient" in-order for lightning to even hit cables on 
balloons.  Think about this!

SilverHa,ha concrete boats are no heavier than the same size boat in fibre glass.I have a little twenty foot Bruce Bingham designed gaff cutter that weighs exactly the same as the Pacific Seacraft production boat made in fibreglass sitting on the same waterline, with the same displacement. My cutter is home built, in ferro cement, to exactly the same plans. It is 1/2" thick. The hull, decks and keel are all one piece. The schooner is 56' and weighs 33 tons fully fueled, and watered, but the holding tank pumped, the last time I checked on haul out. Not bad for a 14' wide vessel carrying 1.5 tons of fresh drinking water, and 150 gal of fuel, and a 1000lb John Deere diesel,seven anchors, over a mile of line, chain, and a ton of books.Cheers Warren

Sounds very nice I would try sailing for retirement like to live back in the Caribe  but I don't do too well on boats my last sailing adventure on a Prout cat on the Med cost me  week in a Turkish prison lol

SilverI have heard of mal de mer, being a bummer on a sailing trip, but a Turkish prison is a very bad case, for enjoying sailing.The world situation has altered for blissfully bobbing about the planet.
Much like the second World War put a damper, so to speak, on would be, sailing adventurers, World politics are less stable than they were in the 90's, or even 2001Even so, I found myself embroiled in a coup, and a general strike, with lawless events, requiring dodging gunfire, and so on.For all that, most people the world over, are good, kind souls, if not on the edge of desperation.It can still be fun to travel, but pick your places.Cheers Warren
