Thanks for the info Dave. K was looking for the absorption method, because I wanted to make it solar, but if can't find it, then will have to try the compressor method you described 40w looks good. The problem with car a/c system is that the parts are expensive! einspace

Buy an old chest freezer. Change the thermostat to fridge type and stick 2 inch thick sheets of polystyrene or wall insulation on top lid and sides. This will keep a ton of food chilled with 100 watt compressor via inverter turning on for about 15 mins every 2 hours. So an average of under 10 watts over 24h.,

The Germans are using zeolite and water in a vacuum the zeolite attracts moisture so strongly it freezes the water And the French are making activated alcohol fregs and then there's the old one of ammonium sulfate in a tube with a center valve you balance the tube and put a fire under the ammonia sulfate end and when it tilts it done the heat drives the ammonia out to the other end you just close the valve put in a stream and when cool put in a cooler under water and open the valve you get a block of ice .might get dangerous when old the most interesting one is the ambient motor generator cooler . it extracts energy from ambient air and turns a motor generator and cold Is a byproduct . If you do the chest keep in as a top open chest so when opening the cold will stay in .as a thermocline .good idea silver ! Were can you find a 100 watt old one I thought they were more ? And if you use a 100 watt you'll need at least five times the wattage on a inverter Glover come the dead short start .ID get 1000 just to keep the stress down . Something else you can do is use urethane at 4 r per inch instead of styrofoam at 1r per inch a but it costs. More .but if you rap it with aluminum milar thermal blankets which refect 99% of infrared heat you can extend the start up time more . I used to have about a 5 or 6 cft chest freezer and it used to run at 105 watts on kW meter. Most small fridge and freezers will run on 1500w inverter.. Yes they need some power to get started but inverters are cheap now. New ones have a deep sleep mode if zero load most of the inverter is disabled so no more 1/2 amp on idle. I can buy today 6kw full sine inverter cheaper than my 5 year old 4kw quasi. Many off grid guys use this chest freezer to fridge mod its cheap and very effective. Propane fridge burn a lot of gas when its running for weeks/months so far from ideal and hard to find a cheap used one in good condition.

Look on Craiglist for mini chest freezer they convert very well in the 6 or 7cft range for use in rv,s boats camping or emergency lights out situation. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iOPvnm3Z1dg&feature=youtu.be#
