Hi George,

How to make a DC Tesla coil would be nice to know as once the DC passes
through the spark gap and hits the primary the secondary voltage climbs
positive and then drops negative with the collapsing flyback pulse so it
becomes AC.  Easier said than achieved.  The voltage coming out of the
topload will punch through just about any diode rectifier.

I believe that all the sightings of UFOs have been sightings of man made vehicles using Tesla's technology, and that there are no aliens.
These vehicles use electromagnetic levitation, with a HV, DC coil on the top and a HV, HF, AC coil on the bottom. If you build a small one for an experiment you will see if it works or not.

Use the sparkgap distance to rectify as there will be a shorter distance where spark can jump.bcka and forth easily in AC  but slowly increase gap distance to where there is just enough energy to jump the gap but not enough to jump backwards now you have DC out of sparkgap. I

DougThat is a good idea.Zilano mentions using components that do just that, which I have purchased quite cheaply.Varistors? I am not sure of the name, but they are able to do just what you describe.The Don Smith circuits often use high voltages that are otherwise difficult to use. I have taken strings of high voltage diodes and placed them inside stout walled plexiglas tubing where you can then treat them as a unit, like ten 1,000 volt diodes soldered in series.Using clear tubing, you csn monitor flash over, should it happen.My Model T Ford coils can easily deliver a very hot 10,000 volt spark that will readily ignite a sheet of printer paper placed in a spark gap.The strings of diodes seem to do a good job for low voltages like the "T" coils. Just for interest sake, Model T coils run off 6 volts DC. Look them up and remember what they look like, because they have wooden boxes,  and brass spark buzzers on top. These things end up on the dusty back shelves of antique stores as Steam Punk art decorations thst are not exactly fast moving merchandise, thst you may be able to pick up cheap.Antique "pickers" clean out old barns and haul the loot into town.Every barn shed had a bunch of these Model T coils sitting on a dusty shelf among the cob webs.Using the 10,000 volts, from a "T" coil, or 5,000,000 volts coming from my Tesla coil, is always a challenge, to rectify it.I have not tamed my Tesla coil yet as it is very recently that I live in a place without neighbours.Firing it up in the backyard in Toronto, destroyed porch lights, security cameras, cell phones, of course all LED lighting, and could get your neighbours out with pitch forks and torches as a mob, digging you out of your workshop like a scene from Frankenstein.I did use it to shoot  lighning bolts for an insurance company commercial, in a 10,000 square foot film studio, for a film crew that flew over from England. For that shoot, I built a grounded Faraday cage for my toy, and the film crew, keeping everything safe, grounded to the sprinkler system. Their footage came out fabulous. Hi Warren 
I had many very thin wind coils of high impedance from surplus store  and would stick thin iron rods into them and point then sideways at 90 degrees directly at the airgap between  NN coils in 12v konehead motor them clustered a bunch of these maybe 10 total, ran them in series, and could get over 2000v  so with this voltage I sent it over a sprkgap then managed to scope it and could change the AC to DC as described...these I called splatter cpils, picking up the stray compressed flux shooting out sides of bucking NN coils at the Airgap.
