Outboard Marine used a two magnets (N-S) imbeded in flywheel with a "E"
iron coil frame which gave the flux reversal "Push- pull" current in
primary! Makes no difference as to which pole leads, evidenced by the
6 cylinder Mercury outboards which were direct drive with no reverse
gear! It had a "double bendix" starter which when you pulled throttle
into "Beta" (reverse) and hit start button, engine would start in
reverse rotation. Magneto was retarded into "After dead center" to fire
in reverse rotation. "simple"!
