 Just found this guy on Utube, wouldn't be surprized if someone here knows him as he seems to be setup in Wash and BC.  He has a business that will fix anything electronic from antique tube to cutting edge digital.
 I have never seen this much old test gear in one place that all seems to be working!
 

 Amazing resource in case one would like to keep something rather than dumpster it, though who knows what prices might be.

 He shows how to make a simple VFD using a TL 494 which you might be interested in...he gets to the schematic at 12:20 into it here is the link
