Thanks Norm

EVs have not taken off in Australia yet, probably because of the long distances between towns and cities and no recharging stations.
I'll check out about the Prius for second hand parts.
I don't want to travel long distances, just into town and back or to a town nearby and back, but I want to be able to go at the speed limit at least 100 kph.

It's more of a hobby thing, something to do.
George

George I saw a motor cycle once that had the motor removed and a car
battery there with a car starter motor reworked to except a chain it ran
for 1/2 hour on the battery ..you should check out that Walker electric
bike that those Mexican university students made .they put some kind of
enhancement on it to conserve energy .and they found out it never needed to
be recharged. Go figure ? News blackout after that .think it was the pope ?

EVs have not taken off in Australia yet, probably because of the long distances between towns and cities and no recharging stations.
I'll check out about the Prius for second hand parts.
I don't want to travel long distances, just into town and back or to a town nearby and back, but I want to be able to go at the speed limit at least 100 kph.

Hi George, A few years back I bought an ex factory used Mitsubishi PHEV from a dealer.
I get between 40 to 50Kms off each home charge.
Enough for about 2 to 3 days shopping around here.

It takes 12KW or maybe a little more to recharge the Lithium Ion batt from standard 240V 10A power point.
About 5 hours. (At 25 cents per KWH it's less than $5).

I use 18 on roof solar panels on house to recharge it during sunny days.
Last week we reached a new high of 43 KWH in one day from the panels.

Sometimes only about 10KWH or less if overcast.

Haven't purchased gasoline for approx last 3 months, about every 6 months the system in the car forces me to put half a tank of fuel through it to keep things lubricated.

I put a mod chip in the car to keep petrol motor from starting when in "eco" mode is selected.
Chip cuts out under sudden acceleration allowing petrol motor to kick in again.

Hate to think what a replacement Li battery might cost, maybe over $10K here?

Anyhow I really like the silence and absolute smoothness of the electric propulsion.
Plus I sometimes tow a trailer with it.... not many hybrids can do this.

I don't have ability knowledge or skill to build an EV but I admire those who do.

 Gerry
Hi Gerry,
That's exactly the sort of thing I have been  looking for, but a little further than 50 km would be good.

I've got a great solar system of 96 panels giving me 24 kw over 3 phase at 8 kw per phase and even in the rain I can get 7 or 8 kw and the same on a dull day, so I won't have any trouble charging a car like that.
Because I haven't been able to find an EV for sale I started toying with the idea of building one.
I want one that can go at least 60 to 80 km if possible.
My nearest town to Canowindra is Cowra, 30 km away.
George

Hi George, Yes with a nice huge solar setup like that..... making good use of the energy is better than wasting it.
As storing energy is very difficult & expensive.
So yep an EV for sure!

I looked at the Prius and also the Jap import Estima hybrid before settling on the Mitsubishi.

There was an Aussie company making a PHEV Li Ion battery mod kit for Prius here

It looks darned expensive though.... nearly half the price of my Mitsubishi, itself just for the kit.

This is same as my vehicle

If you have the know how to build yourself an EV I recon it would be very satisfying project & a great achievement.
Sometimes there's too much complexity in the cars we drive nowdays & no bastard knows how to fix em anyway.

 Good luck mate, Gerry
