I am no electrical engineer, but I can usually get what I want to happen, if indeed, it is possible.
Software is my challenge.
I can program, when push comes to shove, but I begrudge the hours out of my life that I spend doing it.
I have been keeping to my goal of at least one motor a day, to be restored greased, magnets fastened down, and the whole unit mounted in a standerdized base mount, and spray painted. Oh! And tested!
So far, I have done six of them ranging from 1/3 hp to 1 1/2 hp
I want another four motors repaired, and restored, for the experiment.
In any case, they need some TLC after moving and bad storage, as they are so very useful, being DC permanent magnet motors.
Then, I must do this arrangement again.
Originally, I used full wave bridge rectifiers.
They are a convenient arrangement of four one way diodes cast in a single block of plastic that cleverly captures the AC energy waves as they rise and also fall in voltage changes, like four check valves, that direct the voltage spikes, and garbage, into two orderly rows, positive, and negative.
Now this otherwise, disorderly noise, blue sparks, and arcs, can be made ready to do useful work!
The DC motor is a fairly simple device that turns a shaft by momentarily switching on a solenoid coil against magnetic fields provided by equally spaced magnets.
This is all controlled mechanically with a rotary switch, indexed to a specific moment of rotation position relative to the position of the coil sliding past the magnet.
Actually, these simple events are a little more complex, in so far, as they are taking place in a much bigger sea of energy fields, all around us.
Electrical engineers faced with solving the nasty problem of arcs, and sparks, at the brushes of DC motors, shortening the life of the DC switching contacts, with heat, and photon emitting light, burning away the copper metal, and turning the carbon into miniature arc lamps, eroding the switch matter, just focused on the destruction.
They just wanted to prolong the motor life between service intervals, as instructed by their employers.
They put capacitors across the brushes to snub this energy doing its nasty business to these motors.
The arcs, and sparks go away. The engineer gets an attaboy, problem solved, next!
Whoah! Along comes the creepy energy harvester, seeking to glean energy from where ever it is just laying about being "wasted."
The diodes work really well for cooling the brushes, and redirecting that energy for something else.
In effect, the solenoid coils of a DC motor are also acting as fly back transformers, inadvertently delivering spikes of hundreds of volts, wrecking radio reception.
Bingo! Hey! RADIO RECEPTION?
Oh yes, the clues have been with us for decades.
We just get annoyed, rather than looking at ortunities, thinking with single track minds trying to do something, and getting angry at things getting in the way, when they can answer a much bigger picture.
I have to watch how much coffee I drink in my morning cup!
I just though I would share with you where I am exploring, with these old permanent magnet DC motors, I have collected.
