Hi Norman,

I would prefer something that's not as harmful as those high power energy discharges. I remember Wolfgang Volkroot warning about microwaves and high energy discharges. Volkroot was chief of a Siemens high energy test lab and saw his coworkers doing the high energy discharges become sick when working with those EM radiating events for years. He also warned about microwaves that made the forests between the then East and West Germany die in straight lines where there were microwave links and powerful radars pointing to the east and west blocks. His opinion back then was that this was getting solved by using fiber optic links instead of microwaves. He should have known the coming revolution in mobile phones which now have microwave transmitters almost everywhere. It was said that enough data to know if mobile phones are harmful would be gathered in 20 years. Haven't we reached that time span now and what is the conclusion? If they're harmful will they be made illegal or is it up to the users to decide for themselves.

Conclusion is that I would prefer to avoid those EMP events and use something less harmful. The EMPs may harm other things then sensitive electronics. Humans don't have senses to fell electromagnetic radiations except for the one octave optical range and perhaps one or two octaves of of infrared radiation. Thus we can't feel the radiation if harmful or not.

The old saying, As above so below certainly applies here for these plasma conditions have been accomplished in research labs to prove out exactly what happens.  Run with what we have learned by applying the info in your device design and methodology.   As strong as a blacksmith anvil.

 A thyristor (SCR) crowbar is also a good protection. It shorts the pulse just like a spark gap and then blows a fuse to disconnect the circuit to be protected..

 I would like to replicate the events through the plasma that I achieved as it creates a huge magnetic pulse that can be harvested but as you say gets to kill the solid state stuff as if the TVS diodes were not even there. At least the ferroresonant amplification without the plasma gap just cooks the TVS diodes like popcorn even though rated at 1000 amps with only about 2 amp 23v input, but spared the rest, I guess it chose at the diodes to manifest.  Oh yeah the ferrotranny was connected with 30 guage wire wrap wire when the 1000 amps TVS diodes exploded from 46w and wire was fine. Have not built the tube circuits yet just working on the solid state grid control circuits first then plan to decouple with something similar to cascode so hopefully the superfast gate driver does not cook.  

 Not sure if Ole's snubber network would stop the event but have the feeling so since caps will suppress the rise time and kill ringing, but have not tried so can't say.  Seems to me the event is created right at the switch and the rise in voltage is like the inertia x acceleration before the end of a whip cracks and necessary.

 Every O/U thing I've ever though worked usually had a Plasm or Arc/Spark.
 Usually not intentionally and the designer always wanted to get rid of it.
