The Mexican said , brush the dust off and see that you are walking on a pool of mercury.  At the time mercury was selling for $26/# so it would have taken a big 4 wheel drive vehicle to go out and retrieve enough mercury to make it worth while to explore. Lots of mercury that the Environmental people frown on.
