Remember to place a capacitor in parallel to the switch to limit the flyback voltage to below whatever the switch can take. Even a mechanical switch is eaten by the plasma formed and also has to be protected by some kind of voltage limiting snubber circuit if the flyback voltage gets too high.

Why not replace the relay with a switching transistor. Mechanical switches wear fast compared to a semiconductor switch.
