MickIt might not be the same, but my Van de Graff generator could fry diodes sitting innocently in little plastic drawers, in another room 35 feet away from where I was playing with it.In that case, I was suspending a stainless steel hollow ball from a thin wire above the big ball of the Van de Graff watching lightning bolts zap between the balls causing the suspended four inch sphere to rotate around the big steel sphere like an eery planetoid lit up in the dark by the spark discharges.It was something that a guy with time on his idle hands could do in the seventies, for or no reason other than it could be done, and it was fun to look at, after you had built your Van de Graff.Oh, and it really helped getting a feature film off the ground, along with some other tricks, getting me thirteen, and a half months, work on the science fiction feature film, along with perhaps, several hundred other people.But fried diodes? They must have been over voltaged by bursts out of the air. Perhaps that thin wire may have been acting as an antenna?I could get sparks to jump about 14 inches with that device. They were just ordinary diodes of the 1970's vintage, some being rather big rectifier germanium type.Cheers Warren

You are smart enough though that after asking that question likely already thought of this, but something this fast one could only discern from the results of the field on other matter an electroscope for instance or some other measurement of displacement current.
