JacobYes, warm barns are important.That's what I am doing nowJack hammered the concrete out of the existig floor only to discover it was built on the farm stone pile.What a job!Had go strip the cage off the excavator to get it in this 150 year old stone barn through the door.Bought a little John Deere tractor at a garage sale, and built a one ton hydraulic dump stone hopper trailer, that runs off the tractor hydraulics.We have pulled, and dumped, forty five loads of basket ball sized rocks out from under that floor.Next, we are putting down crushed limestone gravel on Monday, and spray urethane foam on Tuesday, On top of the foam steel grid reinforcement goes down on spacers. On this, a whole distribution system of very rugged plastic heating tubing goes down , ny-tied to the grid, as well as plastic electrical distribution conduits for the future baseboard outlets.Another steel wire grid layer on top.When that is all done, the concrete truck comes in to pour a five inch slab.
An electric heat pump system and pump from the heat exchanger will circulate liquid through the tubing heating the slab.This winter it will take the heat from the air, as we just don't have the time for the solar roof panel installation. The idea is to heat water, saving the heat, and then supplying that heat to the heat pump. This can be done directly with thermal panels, or with voltaic panels heating water.The less efficient voltaic panels can have the electricity re-directed, of course, making them useful year round.The steel roof has been sprayed with four inches of foam, already.Doors and windows have yet to be installed.The other barns, well, just dealing with structural issues, so far.That is what I have been up to, recently.It is a hell of of a way to get a heated work space out in the country.Cheers WarrenSent from Yahoo Mail on Android
